SENNAC-South East Nebraska Native American Coalition

SENNAC-South East Nebraska Native American Coalition SENNAC sponsors and creates programs to positively impact Native Americans in southeast Nebraska. Check out our new website here: http://sennac.me

SENNAC recognizes the following root causes, contributing factors, and consequences of issues affecting Native Americans in southeast Nebraska:

Root causes: Loss of cultural heritage, learning of Native values, and lack of parental engagement. SENNAC believes urbanization has decreased/minimized values, pride, and traditions among Native populations in southeast Nebraska. From boarding schools

starting back in the late 1800s and continuing today, there has been a loss of parenting skills, as people were taken from their cultural values, and work ethic. Some boarding schools were utilized for families in poverty needing to provide meals, warmth, and some guidance for their children. Contributing Factors: single parent families (financial need and lack of role models), substance abuse and related concerns, incarcerated parents, youth wards of the state living in group homes and youth centers, disconnection between youth and adult Natives, low self-esteem/confidence, adoption of Native children into non-Native families, lack of education among all ages, repeated cycles of dysfunction, lack of knowledge and cultural competency among service providers. Consequences: Mortality rates, su***de, physical/mental health issues, substance abuse/addiction, teen pregnancy, hopelessness, lack of knowledge and skill development, racial profiling, poor academic achievement (low graduate rate of high school Native youth), intercultural conflicts, lack of communication among Native populations (issues of trust and jealousy).

Charli Earth was born and raised in Winnebago. She is an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. She recently graduated from Little Priest Tribal College with her Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.

She plans on attending the University of Arizona in the fall to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science. Charli’s favorite foods are pizza and alfredo.

What she has on her bucket list is to travel for months straight.

A quote Charli lives by is “Everything negative– pressure, challenges– it’s all an opportunity to rise,” Kobe Bryant.

What Charli hopes to learn during her time as an intern at Ho-Chunk, Inc. is critical thinking and strategic thinking skills. She also wants to understand community development and to find her role within the company.
