For people with developmental and intellectual disabilities too often, “lacks capacity” really means “wasn't given a fair chance.” Capacity is not measured by how quickly someone understands an explanation that was rushed, full of jargon, or delivered only once. People with intellectual disabilities have the right to information presented in ways that make sense to them, with time to ask questions and support to understand. Before deciding that someone cannot make a complex decision, we should first ask whether we have done a good enough job of explaining it.

Our newsletter is out now!

It begins:

“Today is Give OUT Day and AWN is honored to build community through our Give OUT Day campaign! We are incredibly grateful to those of you who have already donated during early giving.

Our organization is utilizing the day to emphasize the importance of nonprofit, grassroots work within the LGBTQIAP+ community and how your generosity can further support such work.

AWN champions for the rights and freedoms of LGBTQIAP+ people in several ways. Our policy advocacy work remains strong as we proudly support policies that protect and advance the rights, healthcare access, and autonomy of LGBTQIAP+ people, and stand against those that don’t.

This year we have signed dozens of policy letters involving gender justice support, advocating for the importance of healthcare funding for transgender youth, and the rejection of attempts to weaken nondiscrimination protections for people with gender dysphoria.”

You can read the newsletter in its entirety, as well as donate to AWN this at the link in the comments below-

Wondering where your donation goes?

Our chart titled “What Your Donation Supports” outlines that!

[image description:
Black text except for the chart title which is in bright pink,

“What Your Donation Supports:”

A policy letter signed that supports healthcare access, disability rights, and gender nondiscrimination policies for LGBTQIAP+ people.

Funding, managerial support, and mentorship for our fiscal allied partners for the LGBTQIAP+ community.

Resources for AWN's sensory break tent at Stanwood-Camano Pride.

The creation of original resources like AWN's Trans Autistic Healthcare Guide or Guide to Voting with specific resources for trans/nonbinary voters.”

Over the last week Gabe has appeared to be very emotional. I had to bring it up and asked if he wanted to share about that.
DAD MISSING US
WHAT WOULD HE TELL OTHERS ABOUT ME?
DO I MAKE HIM PROUD?
I was sobbing. I tried to tell Gabe what I imagined his dad would say. Everything I feel about Gabe Seth would feel too so it was very easy to answer that honestly. It would be impossible to not be proud of him!
I asked Gabe if there is anything he would want his dad to know about him?

“The future they dreamed of.

This Pride, we're honoring the trans people who came before us: visionaries like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Lorena Borjas, Cecilia Gentili, Monica Roberts, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, alongside the countless trans people whose courage, care, and leadership have shaped our movement.”

[ID:

Slide 1 - A pink and lavender gradient background with the Transgender Law Center logo at the top. Large text reads, "The future they dreamed of." Smaller text explains that Pride is an opportunity to honor the trans organizers, caregivers, storytellers, and visionaries who imagined a world where trans communities could live with dignity, safety, and freedom. Along the bottom are portraits of four influential transgender leaders: Marsha P. Johnson wearing a floral crown and white blouse, Cecilia Gentili in a flowing yellow dress holding red flowers, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy in a patterned top with a bright red scarf, and Lorena Borjas seated in a mustard-yellow outfit.

Slide 2 - A pink and lavender gradient background with the Transgender Law Center logo at the top. Text describes a future where every trans person has access to healthcare, housing, education, employment, and the resources needed to thrive, and where trans identities are respected and protected. Below the text is a black-and-white archival photograph of Sylvia Rivera sitting on a waterfront piling, wearing a light-colored jacket and skirt.

Slide 3 - A pink and lavender gradient background with the Transgender Law Center logo at the top. Text describes a future where trans people can grow older, build families, pursue their dreams, and experience joy without fear, and where trans communities and leadership are celebrated. Below the text is a photograph of Monica Roberts speaking at a podium against a colorful backdrop.

Slide 4 - A pink and lavender gradient background with the Transgender Law Center logo at the top. Text reflects on the ongoing work of building a more just future, emphasizing care, storytelling, and collective action. The slide concludes by honoring trans ancestors and inviting viewers to support Transgender Law Center's movement through a donation link.

They fought for more than survival. They dreamed of a world where trans people could live with dignity, safety, freedom, and joy.

Every act of care, every story shared, every barrier broken, and every fight for justice brings that future closer.

This Pride, we honor our transcestors by continuing to build the future they dreamed of. 🏳️‍⚧️]

Image description and caption below in quotes both by the named advocates

“Happy Pride Month, fam!

For lots of disabled and chronically ill folks, Pride has never felt inclusive.

They feel ignored or forgotten.

But we see you.

Whether you're out or can't be out, we see you.

We celebrate you.

And Pride? It should always be accessible, intersectional, and inclusive.

[Image description:

The text in white that is centered reads:

“PRIDE SHOULD BE:

ACCESSIBLE

INTERSECTIONAL

INCLUSIVE.” ]
