Dennis Campbell Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education at Lincoln College, is approximately 4 miles due north of Lincoln, Illinois, off County Road 2000N halfway between County Road 1100E and 1225th Ave; from Co Rd 2000N take the gravel road Small-Edwards Trace north to the center. The Campbell Creekside Center is an innovative 4-acre educational site recognized by the scientific com

munity for its biological diversity and geological and archeological significance. The Center features a lecture pavilion, insectarium, greenhouse, restored tall grass prairie, native gardens, demonstration pond, council ring fire pit, solar and wind energy developments, storm water management and rain garden, nature trails and access to Sugar Creek near the location that Illinois’ largest wooly mammoth fossil was discovered in 2005. Creekside has free parking and portable restroom facilities. Boardwalks and sidewalks make the site handicapped-accessible. In addition to being used for LC science curriculum, Creekside is available to area educators for teaching students of all ages about land use, environmental science and conservation; research projects; and to the general public for walking and recreation. Since its grand opening in Fall 2014, it has been used by the Lincoln College Theatre department to stage plays, by Logan County Master Naturalists doing research, as a subject for plein air painting by the Logan County Arts artists club, and for stargazing parties.

A safari for Ice Age big game in Logan County? It may sound like Hollywood, but it’s definitely possible. Lincoln College’s Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education would be a good place to start. It has two important features for a successful fossil safari – a creek and someone who knows what to do with a fossil when you find it.

A high point of any visit to Lincoln College’s Creekside Outdoor Environmental Education Center is an amble along the site’s long plank walkway. The Rotary Peoples of the Past Boardwalk is handicapped-accessible and stroller-friendly, increasing the exploration options for nature lovers and families during all seasons out at Creekside.
