Week 3 done!
And today was a special day at The Center for Creativity & Community. [A bit of a long post, but we appreciate you reading!]
Our topic today was Black History Month, inspired by the work of Black artist Charles McGee. Over seven decades, McGee's art reflected ‘the energy of life’: interdependence, equality, and connection among all living things. His life and art aimed to promote peace, balance, and harmony, exploring various styles with curiosity to make the world better.
All of which we hope to instill in our students at The Center.
Our afternoon concluded with a cherished guest, Jennifer Hunt from The Hunt for Foundation. She delivered a presentation on Black History Month, covering its origins and featuring influential Black figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the late Rev. Jesse Jackson. The insightful and inspiring discussion was inspired by Dr. King's quote: "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
One of the unique aspects of The Center is our emphasis on empowering our student to engage their creativity to make their communities braver for everyone. Today, we did that by learning how Black History is U.S. history, and that we all can make a difference!
We will see you next Tuesday!
* Remember, The Center for Creativity & Community offers a FREE after-school program for students in grades 6-8. We provide homework assistance, mentorship, and a space for creative exploration in a community that values curiosity and inclusion.
