One of my favorite John memories is the day he gave our oldest daughter her very first cockpit tour during family day at VMM-364.

We had often dreamed about what it would be like to introduce our girls to aviation, to take them flying, and to help them feel that same sense of wonder, like having โ€œa magic carpetโ€ that could take them anywhere.

Although becoming a pilot was Johnโ€™s lifelong dream, being a father was one of his greatest callings. He couldnโ€™t wait to share his love of aviation with our girls, whether that meant adding ear protection for airshows and flight headsets to baby registries, decorating Eleanorโ€™s nursery with airplanes, or having custom baby blankets made for both girls featuring one of his favorite aircraft, the V-22.

It was a brief moment, quickly captured in a photo, but it tells a much bigger story about the โ€œwhyโ€ behind our mission.

John loved to uplift, encourage, and inspire, sharing the wonder and joy he found in flying with those he loved. Just like flying, fatherhood was second nature to him - a calling that brought out the very best of who he was. His daughters were the heart of everything he did.

When we think about our mission, we come back to memories like this: how John inspired others to have the courage to dream, and how his legacy continues to give others the confidence, support, and opportunity to pursue dreams of their own.

Today, our dream of showing our girls the wonder of flight carries forward. They are learning about aviation through the stories of our recipients, the lives we touch, and the dreams we help take flight. They love seeing photos, learning about each recipient, and celebrating milestones right alongside us. They pop into board meetings to wave hello, where they see their father honored through action and purpose.

Thank you to all those who continue to create space to honor Johnโ€™s memory. Your support means everything to our family and to everyone touched by this mission.

Forever loved, forever missed.

โœˆ๏ธ Weโ€™re proud to highlight Capt Sax Foundation scholarship recipient, Cason Brinkley.

At just 17 years old, Cason is already building an incredible future in aviation. A recent graduate of Cleveland Central High School in Mississippi, he has balanced academic excellence, leadership, service, and flight training with remarkable discipline and determination.

Casonโ€™s passion for aviation began at age 9, after a Southwest Airlines pilot invited him into the cockpit following a family flight to Florida. That brief act of kindness sparked a dream that quickly became a mission.

Since then, Cason has immersed himself in aviation opportunities across the country through programs with organizations including OBAP and BPA. He has logged more than 40 flight hours, earned his Student Pilot Certificate, and became the youngest African American to solo an airplane in Mississippi in July 2024 - an achievement later recognized in the Congressional Record by U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson.

Beyond aviation, Cason has served as class president, maintained an outstanding GPA, participated in numerous leadership organizations, and spends Sundays leading worship through music at church.

This fall, Cason plans to continue his aviation training through Tuskegee Universityโ€™s LIFT Academy, where he will work toward his instrument, commercial, and multi-engine ratings as he continues pursuing his goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot.

Cason, we are honored to support a small part of your journey. Your discipline, faith, leadership, and love for aviation are already inspiring others, and we are excited to see where aviation takes you next.

Keep reaching for the sky.

June is a month of deep reflection for our family and the root of our mission - honor the life of Capt John Sax.

As we approach the anniversary of Johnโ€™s passing, we find ourselves looking back, not only at what was lost, but at what continues to grow. What began as a way to honor Johnโ€™s life has formed a mission shaped by the same purpose, service, mentorship, and passion for flight that he carried throughout his lifetime.

Each year, this time brings a mix of remembrance and resolve. It is a reminder of the impact Johnโ€™s life has had, and how that impact continues through the people and opportunities supported in his name.

Throughout this month, we will be sharing stories that embody our mission. Stories of hope, perseverance, and individuals who we were able to lift up together, because John lived.

Stay with us as we reflect, remember, and continue moving this mission forward together.

With all we do, we honor him.

Do you know someone chasing a future in aviation? Tag them below. Whether they are just starting out or already deep into their training or education, letโ€™s show them the strength of a community that believes in their potential.

At the Capt Sax Foundation, our mission is simple but powerful: to help ensure those dreams are not grounded by financial barriers.

We are honored to support individuals pursuing futures across aviation who carry the same passion, discipline, and standard of excellence that John brought into every cockpit, every friendship, and every interaction.

The path into aviation is not always straightforward. Some are working toward their private pilot certificate, navigating the early stages of flight training and building hours one lesson at a time. Others are pursuing advanced ratings, aviation degrees, aircraft maintenance, aeronautical studies, air traffic control, or other paths that help keep the aviation world moving forward.

Our scholarships and grants exist to support individuals at different stages of that journey, but this mission is bigger than application windows. It is about building a community where those pursuing aviation feel seen, supported, and encouraged to keep going.

From students in ground school to future mechanics, pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, and aviation professionals, every journey matters.

Your tag, share, or encouragement could be the connection that helps someone discover aviation scholarships, access training or educational funding.

If you are pursuing a future in aviation, we invite you to follow along and stay connected. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about upcoming scholarship cycles and how you can be part of this mission.

These words have guided the Capt Sax Foundation from the very beginning. They are so much more than our mantra: they're the driving purpose behind this mission: to honor and remember John in a way that reflects who he was and what mattered to him.

We honor John by saying his name, sharing his story, and carrying forward the spirit he brought into the lives of the people around him. His voice, his values, and the way he chose to live continue to shape the decisions we make and the standard we hold ourselves to.

From the beginning, our volunteers and executive board have understood the heart of this work: continue Johnโ€™s legacy by encouraging others and helping them pursue their dreams in aviation. We give our time because John gave his. We meet recipients with enthusiasm because encouragement mattered to him. We believe in them because he would have.

We honor John by building something meant to last. Carrying this mission forward for years to come is one way we ensure his name continues to be spoken, his story continues to be shared, and his impact continues through the lives of others.

We carry him with us.

The cost of pursuing aviation dreams adds up faster than many people realize. While the FAA minimum for a Private Pilot Certificate under Part 61 is 40 flight hours, most students need closer to 60 to 75 hours to build proficiency and complete their training.

Between aircraft rental, fuel, instructor fees, ground school, testing, materials, gear, and checkride costs, earning a private pilot certificate can quickly cost thousands of dollars, often reaching well into five figures depending on location, aircraft type, and training pace.

And that is only the beginning.

As students progress through aviation training, the required hours and costs continue to grow. Commercial Pilot Certificate applicants pursuing an airplane single-engine rating must accumulate 250 total flight hours under Part 61 regulations, with many continuing on to instrument, multi-engine, CFI, and CFII training afterward.

Aviation careers also extend far beyond the cockpit. Future maintainers, engineers, air traffic controllers, and other aviation professionals face their own educational expenses, including tuition, tools, certifications, training programs, and equipment.

That is where aviation scholarships make a difference. Scholarship support helps reduce financial barriers so students can continue training, complete certifications, and stay focused on their goals.

At the Capt Sax Foundation, 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to aviation scholarships supporting individuals across aviation, including pilots, maintainers, engineers, air traffic controllers, and other professionals who help make flight possible.

Every dollar raised helps someone keep going, and helps us honor the life and legacy of Capt John Sax. We are so deeply grateful for your support.

Weโ€™re proud to highlight another exceptional Capt Sax Foundation scholarship recipient, Zachary Terese.

Zacharyโ€™s path into aviation is rooted in service, curiosity, and discovery. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2007, his early years were shaped by life in a military family, with moves to Kansas and Washington state for his fatherโ€™s Army assignments. Growing up on and around military installations, Zachary developed a fascination with flight through airshows, aircraft overhead, and the world of aviation around him.

That curiosity became commitment. Throughout high school, Zachary completed four years of Air Force Junior ROTC, building a strong foundation in leadership and discipline. His senior year brought several major milestones, including earning the rank of Eagle Scout and continuing his flight training journey. On August 19, 2025, just days before beginning at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, Zachary earned his Private Pilot Certificate.

Now a member of EAA, AOPA, and the Commemorative Air Force, Zachary is pursuing a degree in Aeronautical Science with the goal of becoming a professional pilot. He hopes to become a flight instructor, qualify for R-ATP, and use aviation to teach, mentor, and inspire others.

Stories like Zacharyโ€™s show why aviation scholarships and grants matter. From flight training and advanced ratings to aviation education, these opportunities help reduce financial barriers and keep dedicated students moving toward long-term careers.

Zachary, we are honored to support your journey. Your discipline, leadership, and commitment to mentorship reflect the same standard John lived by.

Four years ago, the world lost five Marines: Nick, John, Seth, Nathan, and Evan. They were more than a headline, a photograph, and more than โ€œone of five.โ€

This represents just a few pieces of who they were, shared through the eyes of their loved ones:

Capt Nicholas โ€œSloppyโ€ Losapio was remembered as a once-in-a-generation pilot: cool, calm, collected, deeply loved, and devoted to the Marines in his care. He was a fiancรฉ, son, brother, friend, and Marine whose smile and laugh lit up the room and whose footprint on this world was vast.

Capt John โ€œBallโ€ Sax was an extraordinary Marine, pilot, father, son, brother, and friend. โ€œTo know John was to love John.โ€ He had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and capable, whether he was in the cockpit, on the flight line, or with those he loved most. John loved his family deeply and often said he was living his โ€œdream life.โ€

Cpl Seth Rasmuson lived boldly and freely. A husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Seth loved dirt biking, hockey, hunting, music, and all things outdoors. As a V-22 crew chief with VMM-364, he took pride in what he did and gave a s**t. In 21 years, Seth lived a full and fearless life, and those who live that way carry forward the โ€œSeth way.โ€

Cpl Nathan Carlson was a husband, son, brother, and friend, remembered as "sunshine" to his wife, Emily. Constantly smiling and laughing, Nathan lifted the spirits of those around him. His joy, energy, and optimism were a gift to everyone who knew him.

LCpl Evan Strickland was a son, brother, partner, and friend. Only 19, on his first and final flight with the Purple Foxes, Evan was kind, compassionate, an old soul, and someone who brought fun, support, and connection to the people around him. His life was full of potential, with so many chapters left unwritten.

Each of these Marines leave behind families, friends, and so many others that loved them so tremendously. There will never be a day where they arenโ€™t continuing to live on in so many hearts and memories.

Nick. John. Seth. Nathan. Evan.

We remember them. We honor them. We carry them forward.

A life well lived.

John had a way of finding the silver lining, even in difficult moments. He believed life was meant to be lived fully, with purpose, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the people around you. Whether he was in the cockpit, with his family, or surrounded by friends and fellow Marines, he brought an energy that made others feel lighter, more capable, and more hopeful. The way he showed up for others left a lasting impact that continues to ripple outward every single day.

As we move through this season of reflection, we keep coming back to one thought: the greatest way we can honor those we have lost is by living our own lives as fully and meaningfully as possible. By chasing purpose. By showing up for people. By finding joy where we can. And by continuing forward even after the hardest days.

To everyone who continues to carry his memory forward, thank you.
