On April 27th, 1764, Provincial Grand Master George Harison of the Provincial Grand Lodge of New York granted a warrant for a Lodge to operate in Detroit. The warrant listed John Christie as Worshipful Master, and Sampson Fleming and Josiah Harper as Senior and Junior Warden respectively.

Four years prior, the English had taken over Detroit from the French following victory in the French and Indian War. Several officers in the occupying army unit, the 60th American Regiment of Foot or Royal American Rifles, were Masons, and desired to form a Lodge.

Zion Lodge, Detroit's second oldest extant organization, has operated under seven warrants or charters throughout our 261 year history:

1st: No. 1 from Grand Lodge of England by Provincial Grand Lodge of New York, 1764

2nd: No. 10, Grand Lodge of Upper Canada, 1794

3rd: No. 1, Grand Lodge of New York, 1806

4th: No. 62, Grand Lodge of New York, 1816 (number changed to No. 3 in 1819)

5th: No. 1, Grand Lodge Territory of Michigan, 1826

6th: No. 99, Grand Lodge of New York, 1844

7th: No. 1, Grand Lodge State of Michigan, 1845

Although our composition and demographics have evolved over time, our commitment to the Masonic precepts and tenets of our ancient and honorable Fraternity have remained steadfast. We are proud of the role we have played in the history of Michigan Masonry and Michigan as a whole, and look forward to many more years of continued service.
