A note from Logan:

I participated on a youth-focused panel entitled How to Effectively and Efficiently Partner with Industry. It was comprised of an industry representative (Kathy Bishop, HR Director, Jireh Semiconductors), a K-12 administrator (Melissa Pendergrass, Coordinator of Career & College Pathways, Hillsboro SD), a policymaker (Jennifer Purcell, Future Ready Oregon Director, HECC), an advocacy leader (Jonath Colon, Deputy Director, Centro de Prosperidad), and myself. I participated on this panel to provide perspective and practical examples of NOW’s success in engaging industry, particularly with regard to providing career growth and exploration opportunities for youth.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness around the importance of good mental health and the impact that mental distress has on individuals and society as a whole. With the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating mental health concerns around the globe, it’s more important than ever to take this opportunity to prioritize mental health awareness.

It’s crucial that we break down the stigma that often surrounds mental health and encourage open dialogue around the challenges individuals may be facing. It’s important that we all understand that mental health affects everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. By embracing a greater understanding of mental health, we can create a society that prioritizes the well-being of all.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, it’s important to seek help from healthcare professionals. This can include psychologists, therapists, or social workers who can provide guidance and support for those struggling with mental distress.

Northwest Oregon Works is committed to supporting the mental and behavioral health field by providing resources and assisting with education barriers for professionals entering the field. We understand the vital role that mental health plays in our communities and we are proud to work alongside healthcare professionals to improve outcomes and increase access to care.

As part of our commitment Northwest Oregon Works also prioritizes serving the underserved BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities in rural Northwest Oregon. We understand the unique challenges these communities face and strive to provide culturally competent care that is sensitive to their specific needs.

Through our partnerships with organizations, we provide training and education to healthcare professionals in the mental and behavioral health field. This includes financial support with education through our grant programs, mentoring on best practices in mental healthcare, understanding and addressing addiction, and offering compassionate care to those in need. By providing these resources, we can help improve the overall quality of care provided in these fields.

We understand the importance of mental and behavioral health care in our communities, and as a result, our work has had a positive impact on the access and quality of care offered in the region. By empowering healthcare professionals with resources and necessary knowledge, we help ensure that individuals seeking mental health help receive the best possible care.

This May, let’s take the opportunity to prioritize mental health in our lives and communities. Let’s break down stigma and encourage individuals to seek the help they need. Together, we can work towards a society that values the well-being of all individuals. We are grateful to each healthcare professional working in the field and pledge to continue supporting them in achieving their mission of providing compassionate care to those in need.
