Symptoms of Anxiety and Coping Skills to Reduce Stress

Having occasional feelings of anxiety is a normal part of life, but people with anxiety disorders experience frequent and excessive anxiety, fear, terror and panic in everyday situations. These feelings are unhealthy if they affect your quality of life and prevent you from functioning normally.

Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Experiencing a sense of impending panic, danger or doom
Feeling helpless
Feeling nervous
Hyperventilation
Increased heart rate
Obsessively thinking about the panic trigger
Sweating
Trembling
These feelings of anxiety and panic can interfere with daily activities and be challenging to control. They are out of proportion to the actual danger and can cause you to avoid places or situations.

You should see your healthcare professional if your anxiety is affecting your life and relationships. Your healthcare team can help rule out any underlying physical health issue before referring you to a mental health professional.

Tips for coping with an anxiety:
Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs. These substances can cause or worsen anxiety. If you can't quit on your own, see your healthcare team or find a support group to help you.
Eat healthy foods. A healthy diet that incorporates vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish may be linked to reduced anxiety, but more research is needed.
Listen to music with headphones.
Learn what situations or actions cause you stress or increase your anxiety. Practice the strategies you developed with your mental health professional so you're ready to deal with anxious feelings in these situations.
Keep physically active. Develop a routine so you're physically active most days of the week. Exercise is a powerful stress reducer that can improve your mood and help you stay healthy. Start slowly and gradually increasing the amount and intensity of your activities.
Learn about your disorder. Talk to your healthcare team to discover what might be causing your specific condition and what treatments might be best for you. Involve your family and friends and ask for their support.
Make sleep a priority. Do what you can to ensure you're getting enough sleep to feel rested. If you aren't sleeping well, talk with your healthcare professional.
Quit smoking and reduce or quit drinking caffeinated beverages. Ni****ne and caffeine can worsen anxiety.
Socialize. Don't let worries isolate you from loved ones or activities.
Take a walk with a friend or pet.
Take medications as directed. Keep therapy appointments and complete any assignments your therapist gives. Consistency can make a big difference, especially when it comes to taking your medication.
Use stress management and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, art, reading and cooking. Visualization techniques, meditation and yoga are examples of relaxation techniques that can ease anxiety.
Write in a journal. Keeping track of your personal life can help you and your mental health professional identify what's causing you stress and what seems to help you feel better.

Your worries may not go away on their own and could worsen over time if you don't seek help. See your healthcare team or a mental health professional before your anxiety worsens. It's easier to treat if you get help early.

November is Youth Home Homeless Youth Awareness Month. In efforts to serve our youth, RISE is asking for donations the basic needs: toiletries, socks, period packs, gift cards for food. If you can assist, please contact PattyAnn Fontenot, RISE Collaborative Management Program Coordinator 303.204.9232.

Something to know:
Youth homeless services providers across the country turn away young people daily because their resources are nowhere near what is needed to serve the enormous number of young people
experiencing homelessness. As long as definitions only reflect how adults experience homelessness– rather than how youth experience it – youth will be undercounted and underserved.
Colorado school districts reported 16,540 homeless students, including 2,034 unaccompanied minors.
1 in 30 adolescents ages 13-17 experience experience some
form of homelessness over the course of a year. 1 in 10 young adults 18-24 are estimated to experience homelessness on their own.
The number of hidden homelessness - couch surfing is moving from one temporary place to another without another safe
and stable place to live is growing
