Two more baby skunks just came in from Windham. Unfortunately mom hasn’t been seen in a few days. We are still trying to capture the third. They are in rough shape with fly stroke, maggots, cold and lethargic. Huge thank you to the wonderful finder for reaching out.

It's Wild Turtle Week! Will you take the turtle pledge?

🐢 Keep wild turtles wild. Never take a turtle home from the wild.
🐢 If it's safe to do so, help turtles cross the road. Always move them in the direction they were going without relocating them to a new area. They know where they want to go!
🐢 Never release a pet turtle in the wild. This could negatively impact native species.
🐢 Learn about turtles and contribute observations to the Maine Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project: mefishwildlife.com/atlas
🐢 Protect turtle habitat by cleaning up trash and leaving no trace.
🐢 Share this post to encourage others to take the pledge.

When a local country club relocated a raccoon they had no idea she was a nursing mama. As soon as they heard the cries of the hungry babies trapped deep within an outdoor deck area they contacted SRWC for assistance. Mama had made her well hidden nest under the end of a long deck in an area impossible for a human body to fit but visible from a few yards away once a volunteer managed to crawl from the only access point available. She counted five babies in all and did her best to summon them with loud and constant mama raccoon calls but they were simply too little to make their way to the source of the sound . When her net was not long enough to reach them , a wonderful custodian named Dale appeared with tape and a pole after completing his own arduous crawl to the babies. After attaching the longer pole to the net , they worked together to retrieve every single one, emerging dustier but happier by the end of the ordeal. Although they were unable to reunite them with Mama, the babies found a new home at the center where they will receive all the care and guidance to become independent wild raccoons until finally released in a safe location where they can live out their natural lives. Baby raccoon season can be filled with many heartaches, and we are sad their Mama cannot raise them , but grateful to the compassionate employees at the Portland Country Club for reaching out for help to save these babies!

Huge thank you to Sarah, Heather and Dale!

We wanted to showcase some of our amazing volunteers who help us save lives everyday! Some come multiple times a week, weekly or even once to do what they can. We couldn’t do what we do without them and you! We have been so very busy ever since we moved into our new facility. It has been nonstop intakes, educational events, releases, medical care and improvements to our new facility. I want to thank everyone for their dedication and commitment to these beautiful animals.

If you want to join our team with direct animal care, answering phones, non-direct animal care, transport and more, please email us at [email protected].

We want to thank three amazing volunteers for their quick action that saved two beautiful turtles. Amy DeCapua was driving along rte 25 in Limington when she saw an injured Blandings turtle on the right side of the road. She jumped into action and collected her to bring to our center.

Vikki our transport/rescuer was able to collect a badly injured large snapping turtle that a finder had called about in Lyman. She rushed down, collected her and got her to us.

We want to thank Steve our transport driver for collecting both turtles and getting them to Center for Wildlife before they closed. We are very hopeful for their recovery.

Without the community, we couldn’t help so many wildlife in need. Thank you for all of your support.
