Update 6/10/26

Maine Game Wardens have made an arrest in connection to this incident. A Waterboro man was charged with aggravated assault (Class B), reckless operation of ATV (Class D), and failing to stop and identify for landowner (Class E).

The arrest was the result of video and trail camera footage as well as multiple tips reported to the Maine Warden Service that assisted with investigation leading to a search warrant.

We are thankful for the support shown by the public in this case, an incident which threatened the well-being of a Maine landowner, future access to private land, and the reputation of Maine’s ATV community.

A ride without respect isn’t worth the cost.

Maine Warden Service is looking for information regarding the owner and operator of a side by side ATV that struck and dragged a landowner who had stopped the ATV on his property.
Last night at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the Pequawket Lake Road in Limington, a landowner watched a side by side ATV ride through their property at a high rate of speed. When the ATV returned a few minutes later, the landowner was able to stop the ATV, and told him he needed to slow down. When the landowner attempted to photograph the ATV and the registration, the operator rapidly accelerated, striking the landowner and dragging him 75 feet before he got away. The landowner was treated at the hospital for abrasions and contusions and was released last night.
The ATV is a one bench side by side that seats two people and is gray and black in color with a prominent brush guard on the front of the ATV. The ATV was driven by a male operator in an orange shirt, with a female passenger who had dark hair.
Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Regional Communications Center dispatch in Augusta at 207-624-7076 ext. 9 or contact MaineOperation Game Thief at 1-800-ALERT-US or maineogt.org if they wish to remain anonymous.

As much as we all love to ride, it’s important to remember there are NO ATV trails in Limerick or Newfield.

Many of our club members own and ride ATVs as well, but to do so legally we travel to designated trail systems. Our local landowners have made it very clear that ATV use is NOT permitted on local snowmobile trails or private property in this area.

Please don’t be “that guy” who thinks the rules don’t apply to them. Landowners have cameras out on the trails, and violations will be reported to the wardens.

We appreciate everyone helping us maintain good relationships with our landowners and protecting access to the trails we do have.

Eight southern Maine clubs came together under one roof this week! We had a good time discussing the ups and downs of sustaining snowmobile trails for all to enjoy. Thank you to the Ossipee Mountaineers Snowmobile Club for hosting the event at their club house. Thank you to all the clubs who attended!

Common goals emerged out of our conversations:

- Interconnect club trails to expand network and offer more trailside accommodations.
- Adjust communication and public outreach methods to attract younger generations.
- Develop collaborative relationships with landowners.
- Team up with neighboring clubs sharing resources to achieve objectives that improve your riding experience!

Above all, clubs are asking snowmobilers, landowners, businesses and others interested to get involved. We get it. We too are chronic snowmobilers with lives outside of the club. Giving up your time, especially during the winter is tough. But without reliable volunteers, no part of what we do is possible. Reach out to any of the clubs below (or your own local club) to understand how you can be part of something big!

The following clubs were represented at this event:

HOLLIS HONKERS
Lyman Snowmobile Club
Mousam Valley Trail Riders
OSSIPEE MOUNTAINEERS SNOWMOBILE CLUB
Rt 11 Streakers Snowmobile Club
Shaker Valley Sno Travelers
Southern Maine Sno-Goers
Squash Hollow Sno Goers

Thank you to the Maine Snowmobile Association for your continued support.
