Lima Astronomical Society

Lima Astronomical Society We are a local nonprofit astronomy group that operates Schoonover Observatory in Lima, Ohio. Public viewing of almost anything beyond the earth's atmosphere.

We commonly view Planets, Moon, Stars, Star Clusters, Galaxies, Nebula, Comets when bright enough, The Sun through a solar filter, Satellites, and Meteors. Programs on meeting nights include Astronomy subjects as well as other interesting science topics.

Tonight, May 8th, 2026, the Lima Astronomical Society will hold its monthly meeting at Schoonover Observatory. A short business meeting will take place, then an astronomy talk by President Mark Casazza on a "Virtual Tour of the Universe". Observing with the telescope will be weather-dependent. Tonight looks to be mostly cloudy.

Friday March 13th at 8:00pm is the monthly meeting of the Lima Astronomical Society at Schoonover Observatory. A short business meeting will take place followed by a program on " Lesser Known Coordinate Systems" given by President Mark Casazza.

Public viewing with the telescope will take place after the program if the weather cooperates.

LAS members, if you have not paid your 2026 membership dues March 31st, you will be placed on the inactive list until paid. You can pay your dues at the meeting or online at LimaAstro.com

We still have a couple LAS officer openings for the year. More will be explained at the meeting.

The Lima Astronomical Society is a volunteer non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization that operates Schoonover Observatory for the City of Lima. Donations are graciously accepted.

Although there is a possibility of Aurora again tonight, they will be sporadic so you will need to keep going out and watching to the northwest. Best to be in an area that is as dark as possible and hope you out at the right time. So far tonight there is a very weak green aurora at the northern horizon.

AURORA ALERT ⚠️
Due to a large Coronal Mass Ejection and an a long lasting X1.9 Solar Flare, the Earth is being bombarded by the largest Solar Storm in the last 20 years as predicted by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

The Solar storm is active now in The Lima area and can be seen in the North and Northwestern sky.

The Aurora is currently in the Northern to Northwestern sky in the Lima area. These cell phone pictures are 4 second exposures from the western edge of Cridersville. This Aurora is also visible with the naked eyes.

Observatory is open now. Tuesday evening October 28. Comet Lemon is currently in the eyepiece. 7:27 pm.
