🎉 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: Look what we did together, Harnett County! 🎉

As we close out September, we are wrapping up our summer Trash Talkin’ Tuesdays series—and what a season it has been!

Over the last 18 weeks, we have talked about the true cost of litter on our economy, the real threats it poses to our local farmers, the danger it brings to our Cape Fear River, and our wildlife, and the importance of our drinking water.

But you didn't just listen to the "Trash Talk." You took action. 🫵💪

Because of the incredible dedication of our local families, civic clubs, agricultural partners, church groups, and youth teams who stepped up to host litter sweeps this summer, we have successfully removed tons of trash from our beautiful roadsides and waterways.

Every bag filled means tax dollars saved, soil protected, and wildlife preserved.
Thank you to every single volunteer who grabbed a bag and wore a high-vis vest this season. While this summer series is wrapping up, our mission to keep Harnett County beautiful never stops. Join our Fall Trash Bash starting October 1st!

🍁 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: Goodbye humidity, hello cleanup weather! 🍁

Today marks the official arrival of Fall! The fierce North Carolina summer heat is finally breaking, the mornings are crisp, and the humidity is dropping.
Who am I kidding? This is NC it’s still hotter than a jalapeños armpit on the asphalt in August. Let's manifest the fall season by giving our county a fresh, clean look.

Gathering your church group, civic club, or neighborhood association for a morning cleanup is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful fall weather while giving back to Harnett County.
We make it simple: 🍂 Tell us where you want to clean. 🍂 We supply all the gear (gloves, vests, grabbers, and bags). 🍂 You enjoy a beautiful, crisp morning making a massive local impact.

💧 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: Straight from the river to your tap. 💧

Let's talk about where your morning coffee or your glass of water comes from. If you live or work in Harnett County, your drinking water is drawn directly from the Cape Fear River.
Now, think about the plastic bottles, fast-food bags, and styrofoam cups floating along our riversides.
• The Connection: Runoff carries that roadside litter into the river upstream of our water intake facilities. While our water treatment plants do an incredible job filtering and purifying our water, the sheer volume of plastic waste presents an ongoing challenge.
• The Threat: Decomposing plastics leach chemical additives into the water source, affecting the overall health of the entire river basin ecosystem.
The most effective water filter is a human being holding a trash grabber.

By conducting a targeted litter sweep along roads, parking lots, and river access areas, you are actively protecting the quality of our community's drinking water before it ever enters a pipe. Protect your tap, and host a cleanup today! 🚰🌊

🚗 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: The high price of high traffic. 🚗

Labor Day weekend is behind us, marking the unofficial end of summer travel. Millions of North Carolinians hit the roads over the weekend, passing through major regional corridors like Highway 401, 87, and 210 right here in Harnett County.
More wheels on the road inevitably means more trash on the shoulders.

• The Hard Truth: According to NCDOT reporting, the state spends millions of dollars on contract litter removal annually. 🌾 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: Honoring our Voluntary Agri Districts. 🌾

Harnett County contains thousands of acres designated as Voluntary Agricultural Districts (VADs). These districts are a promise to preserve our rich farming heritage, protect open green spaces, and maintain the agricultural identity of our county.
But a preserved agricultural community deserves to be a clean one.
Littering near agricultural land doesn't just look bad; it actively undermines the hard work our farmers put into maintaining their land. Blowing trash ruins beautiful landscapes, alters local soil chemistry, and can severely impact properties that have been farmed by local families for generations.
Let's honor our agricultural heritage by keeping the borders of our VADs pristine.
Whether you live right next to a farm or just enjoy the fresh, local food they produce, organizing a litter sweep is a powerful way to say "thank you" to our farming families. Let’s keep Harnett green, clean, and farmed! 🌾❤️

🌧️ TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: The roadside pipeline to our rivers. 🌧️

It’s easy to look at a piece of litter in a roadside ditch and think, "Well, at least it's not in the water." But in reality, our county's drainage ditches are a direct pipeline to our major water source, the Cape Fear River.
When afternoon summer thunderstorms roll across North Carolina, storm water rushes through these ditches, acting like a conveyor belt.
• The Route: Trash dropped on a highway or roadside in Harnett County, washes into a ditch, flows into local creeks like Upper Little River, Hectors Creek or Buies Creek, and dumps directly into the Cape Fear River.
• The Double Trouble: Beyond water pollution, accumulated trash clogs drainage pipes, leading to localized road flooding during heavy rains.
By cleaning out a simple roadside ditch during a litter sweep, you are stopping water pollution before it ever reaches the river.
