Kauai AARP Tax Aide offers free tax help

AARP Foundation Tax Aide provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 years old and have low to moderate income.
The Tax Aide states individuals do not need to be an AARP member to use the service.
All of the AARP Tax Aide locations will be available on a first come, first served basis from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
From Feb. 11 & the last day will be April 1.

LIHUE — Volunteer AARP Tax Aide tax preparers are getting ready following the recent Internal Revenue Service announcement that the 2025 tax season starts on Jan. 27, the first day the IRS will accept returns.

The AARP Foundation Tax Aide provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 years old and have low to moderate income.
The Tax Aide states individuals do not need to be an AARP member to use the service.
The need for preparation ahead of the first location opening is due to the tax preparation team needing to be IRS-certified.
Yankowitz said there are several announcements ahead of the opening of the first Tax Aide location that will open on Feb. 11 at the Lihue Neighborhood Center, the older side, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The AARP Tax Aide locations will be available from Feb. 11, and the last day will be on April 1.
This year, Tax Aide will return to Kapaa when it opens at Kalukalu at 1624 on Feb. 20. This is the Kauai Federal Credit Union’s Kapaa site that was formerly known as the Otsuka’s Building on Kuhio Highway.
Depending on the response on Feb. 20, there is a possibility Tax Aide will be back on Feb. 21.
Another new site for this year is at the Kukui Grove Center that will be available on March 28 and 29.
“This is the first time Tax Aide will be available on a Saturday,” Yankowitz said.
“I don’t think the AARP Tax Aide on Kauai has ever had a Saturday opening.”
All of the AARP Tax Aide locations will be available on a first come, first served basis from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
People looking to have their taxes prepared should have all of their documentations with them and available for the tax preparers.
Last year, the AARP Tax Aide program on Kauai helped more than 400 people.
The Tax Aide website says that since 1968, Tax Aide has helped more than 80 million taxpayers receive all of the credits and deductions they’re entitled to.
“We don’t turn anyone away,” Yankowitz said.
