Stop by the Rescue Squad/Fire Department’s booth at the 2026 Cannon County Good Ole Day and register to win a free Fire Extinguisher. A drawing will be held and 25 families in Cannon County, Woodbury, or Auburntown will win a free home Fire Extinguisher. We also have free Yellow DOT medical forms and lots of giveaways for children. This project is sponsored by the Rescue Squad and all the Volunteers Fire Stations throughout our community. We are grateful for a generous grant from the General Mills Foundation, which helps us support our outreach programs and improve safety in our communities.

6:21 PM CST: Very dangerously cold temps across CannonMesonet. Short Mountain station is already down to 6F. Anyone going outside needs to be tracked for their own safety. You do not want a loved one to go outside, slip down on ice and get knocked out in these temps. Give short time limits to return, and if they do not, go looking for them. Tonight's expected low is 3F.

⚠️ 1/25 3:00 pm Update ⚠️

11,500+ members affected by outages currently. Systems Control, line crews, engineering teams, and more are actively working to restore power across the system.

We're glad to see the number trend down from earlier, but winter storms like these can cause seemingly random outages as the weight of accumulated ice breaks trees and equipment over time.

🦺 Downed powerlines are still a concern along with trees making contact with lines and creating a path to ground for electricity. If you are outside, stay aware of these situations to protect yourself.

MTE works to educate members about these dangers through our Hotline Demonstration trailer. With ice on the road and trees breaking lines, we wanted to share these safety videos for you.

This YouTube playlist outlines how to stay safe in these scenarios:

1️⃣ What to do if your vehicle runs into a power line
2️⃣ How high voltage affects the body
3️⃣ The dangers of step potential
4️⃣ What happens when a ladder contacts power line

Let's be honest, who didn't know Karen Ashford? No one because she loved her community and never met a stranger. She made everyone feel like family. She was dedicated in everything she did. She lived, loved, and breathed God, Family, Community, and Her First Responder Family! And nothing made her more proud than serving as Gassaway's Fire Chief. There will be a void in Cannon County from here on out and there's not a single person that can fill it. She will be missed dearly.
