The May Libertad Chapter meeting was filled with several special moments: 1) a first-ever scholarship was presented, 2) installation of the 2026-2028 slate of officers, and 3) a unique program!

~Mr. Ed Seymour presented the first-ever Pat Seymour Memorial Scholarship in memory of his dear wife Pat, who was a Libertad member. [**See separate post for more**].

~The 2026-2028 slate of Libertad DAR officers was installed; the incoming leadership raised their hands, assuming their new roles in the Chapter. One member was unable to be present but called in during the installation and participated over the phone! The new slate of officers is:

Regent: Ann Daniel Rogers
Vice Regent: Dani Daniel Brister
Secretary: Catherine Rogers Kuchan
Treasurer: Susan Daniel
Registrar: Myrna Finch (on the phone)

~And, finally, the Program (images are of the video):

"KNOWN BUT TO GOD", are the words carved into the marble of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Regent Ann Rogers enlightened members by combining a video documentary with her own research into the topic, adding unique trivia into the intense discipline, secrets, and strict daily routines required to guard this sacred site at Arlington National Cemetery.

Here are a few of the special points covered:
*The Power of 21: Every movement revolves around the number 21, *mirroring the 21-gun salute*, the highest military honor. A Sentinel takes exactly 21 steps down the black mat, stops and faces east for 21 seconds, faces north for 21 seconds, and takes 21 steps back.

*Humility in Service: Sentinels wear no rank insignia on their dress uniforms while on the plaza. This ensures they *never outrank the unidentified fallen heroes they protect*.

*The Shield Concept: Sentinels always carry their rifle on the shoulder furthest from the Tomb. As they execute a turn, they crisp-shift the weapon to the outside shoulder, *symbolizing that the guard always stands as a physical shield* between the public and the Tomb.

*Extreme Preparation: It takes an *average of 8 hours of preparation* just to get a single uniform ready for a shift. Honor guard instructors use rulers, calipers, and gauges during strict, zero-defect uniform inspections. Every detail, from the crease in the trousers to the alignment of brass, must be mathematically precise (*some to 1/64th of an inch*) or the guard risks disqualification for the event.

*Highest Standard: The Honor Guard Medal is a distinction reserved for those who maintain the highest standards of conduct. It stands as the *only decoration subject to immediate revocation* if a current or former guard fails to uphold the behavioral expectations of the unit.

*Uncompromising Vigilance: Rain, sleet, or historic blizzards—the watch never stops. Sentinels have stood continuous, unbroken guard over the Tomb *every second of every day since 1937*.

~Thank you to hostesses Ann Rogers and Nan Headrick for the spread of appropriately colorful, patriotic refreshments. Our next meeting will be the annual Constitution Day Luncheon in September.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION!!
At the May 2026 Libertad Chapter, DAR meeting, Mr. Ed Seymour presented the first-ever $1,000 Pat Seymour Memorial Scholarship to **Jocelyn Pedraza Perez**, a 2026 graduate of Liberty High School.

This new scholarship honors the memory of Mrs. Pat Seymour, a dedicated Libertad, DAR member and lifelong educator; the scholarship supports local students pursuing *vocational* or *associate* degrees.

Jocelyn perfectly embodies the spirit of this award. She will begin her journey in Medical Billing at Lone Star College this fall, with long-term aspirations of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Her dedication and inspiring vision for her future made her the ideal recipient.

The Ladies of Libertad are deeply honored to celebrate this emotional milestone and extends sincere gratitude to those who made it possible:
~Mr. Ed Seymour for his generosity and for including our chapter in this beautiful memorial to Miss Pat,
~Libertad Chapter Treasurer Susan Daniel for her coordination with Liberty High School to identify the deserving candidate, and
~Jocelyn, along with her family, for graciously sharing this memorable event with the Libertad Ladies.

Tonight the Libertad Ladies recognized four amazing student-writers of American History. The program was led by committee chair Laurie E.

These students were given the prompt "Lunch with a Signer" and each researched the Declaration of Independence authors, chose one of the "signers" and wrote an essay on what lunch with that historic figure would be like.

With nearly 100 submissions from students in grades 5th through 8th, these four students were named winners for their grade:

5th grade is Everly Foster - Devers
6th grade is Adalynn Skinner- Liberty
7th grade is Christopher Younts- Liberty
8th grade is Hallie Marks- Liberty

Tonight at the meeting, these four students read their winning essay for the members and audience.

Each winner was awarded a certificate, a $25 gift card, and a copy of Texas DAR's recently published historical account "Texas Before the Lone Star" book, signed by members in attendance.

A scented candle was given as a door prize and was won by a teacher in attendance!

This essay contest is open to all Liberty County schools with 5th - 8th grade students. *If you would like information on this or any aspect of DAR, please message us here on Facebook.*

Many thanks to Susan D and Myrna F for the refreshments and Liberty Church of Christ for the facilities.

WHAT A TURN OUT! ❤️

Thank you to all the past Libertad Chapter, NSDAR Good Citizen Recipients who attended our first-ever Reunion.

The Ladies of Libertad and all guests thoroughly enjoyed hearing each of your stories providing an update on where Life has taken you and all which you accomplished through the years.

Silly superlative awards were given for youngest, eldest, recipient living nearest to her childhood home, recipient farthest from home, multiple recipients within a family line, and a few thank you notes, too.

And, for those who were unable to attend but shared a bio, the guests loved hearing your stories, too!! 😁

Many thanks to the Liberty Church of Christ, Donna D, Alana I, and Jo Ann W for the delicious refreshments.

If you missed the event, we would still love to hear from you as we want to have another reunion in a few years. ❤️ Fill in the Contact Form below for future reunion announcements.
