Barb was a wonderful friend to our Head Start here in Union County. Her love and passion for the program was felt across the nation. We will honor her life through the work we continue to do each and every day. Barb will be deeply missed. ❤️
We share this news with heavy hearts.
Barbara “Barb” Haxton, one of the most beloved figures in the history of Head Start, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2026. She was 92 years old, and she spent more than 40 of those years making this field better – as a program director in Warren County, Ohio, a tireless advocate in the halls of Congress, a consultant who traveled to nearly every state in the country, and the heart behind a leadership institute in Vail that shaped hundreds of early childhood leaders over 14 summers. Nobody matched strategy to passion like Barb.
Those who knew Barb will tell you she was warm and exacting in equal measure. On Monday’s Stand-Up Meeting, memories poured in from across the community:
♥️ She believed in you, and she expected you to believe in yourself.
♥️ She would not let you leave the room until you spoke up too.
♥️ She would hug you in the hallways of Congress.
♥️ She would dare you to take risks and ask, simply, "Why not?"
Her humor was legendary. Outside the conference rooms and congressional hallways, she adored horses, her family, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the children and families she served. She spent her last day at a Mother’s Day dinner with two of her daughters — living, to the very end, exactly the life she wanted.
NHSA extends its deepest condolences to her family and to the legion of colleagues, mentees, and friends who stand on her shoulders. Barb, we are better because of your brilliance, authenticity, and devotion. Rest in peace.
