In observance of Juneteenth, the Historic Downtown Liberty office will be closed today, June 19.
Today we honor and celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and recognizing the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation's history. ❤️🖤💚💛
The fountain pictured here is the Freedom Fountain, located at the NE corner of the Clay County Courthouse. Erected in 2000 by The Clay County African American Legacy Inc., the monument honors African Americans who have contributed to the growth and development of Clay County, representing the communities of Liberty, Excelsior Springs, Missouri City, and North Kansas City.
▪️The Freedom Fountain stands near the location where enslaved people were regularly bought and sold more than 175 years ago.
▪️The monument's single water fountain serves as a powerful reminder of progress and unity, contrasting an earlier era when residents drank from segregated water fountains.
▪️The reverse side of the monument recognizes African American businesses, churches, schools, and pioneer families that have shaped Clay County from the 1800s to the present day.
