The bird of the week is the Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). This bird is known for complex songs and mimicry, often singing late into summer evenings. A single male can learn and mimic the songs and calls of up to 40 different bird species, and also car alarms or other sounds. The Northern Mockingbird is the State Bird of 5 states! The Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) is the bird of the week. These secretive woodland birds have distinctive knocking calls often heard before summer storms. They primarily eat hairy caterpillars (like tent caterpillars), which are toxic to most birds, and may even shed their stomach lining after eating too many to get rid of the toxins.

This week's bird of the week is the Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus). These large brightly colored flycatchers are common, but because they spend their time high in the canopy, you might not see them often. They have a distinctive call so listen to a recording and then look for them along wooded edges. They famously line their nests with shed snake skins (or sometimes cellophane and plastic wrappers) as a tactic to deter predators.
