We want to send a huge shoutout of appreciation to First Montana Bank - Libby for their generous donation in the amount of $1,000.

What makes this gift extra meaningful is the fact that the funds were donated to us in the memory of Dick Wood who passed away in February. We were honored to accept their gift as a way to perfectly capture Dick’s legacy, turning profound loss into a lasting tribute that will continue to help the community he loved for a long time to come. Most importantly, their kind gesture serves as a reminder that Dick will never be far from our hearts.

We thank you First Montana Bank and the entire community for your support not only through your monetary contributions, but morally just as well.

LIGHT THE NIGHT FOR FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS APRIL 26TH THROUGH MAY 3RD

PLEASE JOIN US AS WE SHINE OUR RED LIGHTS IN REMEMBRANCE OF AMERICA'S FALLEN FIRE HEROES WHO "ANSWERED THE CALL" AND NEVER RETURNED HOME.

Each May, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland to honor and pay tribute to the firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. To make the event even more symbolic, the NFFF launched the first Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters in 2017. From that time, this event has gained widespread recognition and now includes communities in all 50 states. As part of this yearly tradition, the NFFF encourages communities to participate by displaying red lights on their landmarks, businesses, firehouses, and homes during the week of April 26 - May 3, 2026.

This is your invitation, Libby, to light up in red along with us! Every single glowing red light serves as a reminder of our fallen heroes who gave everything to protect the lives and property of neighbors and strangers alike – no matter the cost.

Yesterday, the Columbia Center in Seattle was teeming with volunteer firefighters from around the globe with one unifying thought in mind - that every step forward to reach the Sky View Observatory serves as a beacon of hope for the entire blood cancer community.

Five of our volunteers, Neil Benson, Brian Hobday, Tim Kim, Steven Scheer, and Jason Sunell, were honored to participate in the 35th Annual Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb in Seattle, Washington. This challenging, 788-foot vertical ascent is designed to be symbolic of the strenuous journey and the “one step at a time” battle that cancer patients endure.

While many individual firefighters have deeply personal connections to blood cancer, the event also serves as a means to foster community involvement, build camaraderie within the fire service, and most importantly, to raise funds for this critical, life-changing cause. Case in point, as of today, families, friends, and the community have helped Team LVFD raise over $64,400 for blood cancer patients and their families since 2014 - the first year the department sent a team to Seattle to participate in this annual event.

To view the history of the LVFD team race results and fundraising amounts, please visit our BCU Stairclimb page at https://libbyfiredept.com/bcu_firefighter_stairclimb.html

Above all, as a department, we would like to thank you for understanding why this cause is so important to us and for showing your support through your donation.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 8, which means it is time to "spring forward" and set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. And even though you have heard it many times before, it is worth repeating the long-standing public safety initiative: Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries.

In the event of a house fire, you may have as little as TWO TO THREE MINUTES from the time the first smoke alarm sounds to get you and your family to safety. However, those critical few minutes only count when your smoke alarms are fully functioning.

Without working smoke alarms, your risk of dying in a home fire is significantly higher - over 50% higher. In fact, about two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes that do not have any smoke alarms or have smoke alarms that failed to operate, often due to dead or missing batteries.

Considering this, we would like to remind everyone to test their smoke alarms and change the batteries this weekend. And while you are at it, check the manufacture date on the back of each of your detectors and replace them if they are over 10 years old.

Dr. Richard S. “Dick” Wood…His light lives on.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of one of our own. Dick Wood, who passed away on February 10, 2026 at the age 83, actively served as a member of the LVFD from 1973 to 1996.

On February 17th, friends and family gathered together to honor the life and legacy of this distinguished veteran firefighter. A gravesite service along with a fire truck procession to the City of Libby Cemetery ensured that Dick’s life, spirit, and service was fully recognized.

In closing, it is only fitting that we leave you with a notable, profound statement Dick made when he was inducted into the Libby High School Hall of Fame in April 2007. He said, and we quote, “Being able to come back to Libby to work and live is something that a lot of our high school grads are not able to do. It has been a rewarding life, and because being busy has always been a part of my being..."

We are forever grateful for his years of service to the community and his family for sacrifices made. We would ask that you keep Dick’s family in your thoughts and prayers. His love for his community, his friends, and his family will never be forgotten. Rest in peace dear friend.

In two weeks, the Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb will be held at the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. Neil Benson, Brian Hobday, Steven Scheer, Jason Sunell, and Tim Kim will be among the 2,000 firefighters from across the United States and around the world participating in the annual event on Sunday, March 8.

In case you missed it, we encourage you to scroll down to our January 13th Facebook post to read about the Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb to learn why Neil, Brian, Steven, Jason, and Tim are climbing for this cause.

While our team has been training feverishly to ascend the 69 flights of stairs to reach the Sky View Observatory, they have also been reaching out to family and friends for donations. Even though you have helped them exceed their fundraising goal, they are not done campaigning on behalf of blood cancer patients. If you would like to help our team of climbers, there is still time to donate. It’s as easy as visiting the LVFD's BCU donation page by clicking the link below.

Last but not least, we especially thank you for your ongoing support and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated thus far.

35th Annual
Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb
Seattle, Washington
Sunday, March 8, 2026

In less than two months, the Blood Cancer United Firefighter Stairclimb will take place, and for the thirteenth year, we have a team of volunteers who will come together along with 2000 volunteer firefighters from around the world to climb to the top of Seattle’s Columbia Center.

In years past, you may remember that this competition has been known as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb. Beginning this year, however, the fundraiser will be operating under the Blood Cancer United banner. This rebranding is exciting news for the entire blood cancer community. With over 100 types of blood cancers, the BCU is expanding its reach to be supportive of every diagnosis beyond leukemia and lymphoma.

While LLS is expanding on its name, their core efforts will remain the same. They will continue to provide personalized information and support to patients and their families; offer financial assistance for non–medical costs; fund crucial blood cancer research; and advocate for policies that ensure accessible, high–quality, affordable healthcare.

Not only will the LLS begin a new chapter in their fight for finding a cure for blood cancer, but this year we also have a first for the event. Historically, we have had a team of two, three, or even four members, but this year, we have a five-person team of volunteers that will be representing the LVFD. While Neil Benson, Brian Hobday, Steven Scheer, and Jason Sunell have conquered the 69 flights of stairs a number of times in the past, this year they welcome Tim Kim to the team.

If you would like to do your part in funding the vital research needed to find the treatments that will change the lives of those affected by blood cancers, you can do so by donating to Blood Cancer United on behalf of Neil, Brian, Jason, Steve, and Tim. To help us meet our fundraising goal, please visit the LVFD team's BCU Stairclimb fundraising page to make your donation.

Report Activities for 2025

On behalf of the LVFD, we would like to present the department’s 2025 Annual Report that highlights the areas that reflect not only the accomplishments and efforts of the department, but also enables us the opportunity to monitor our past performance and identify areas that need improving.

In line with a majority of the volunteer fire departments across the United States, the LVFD experienced a very busy 2025. This year, our call volume jumped from 87 in 2024 to 147 - an amount that we have not seen in almost 20 years. This being the case, the total number of hours spent on incidents in the City of Libby and the surrounding communities increased from 635 hours in 2024 to 1,013 last year.

Of equal importance is the need for accurately reporting the hours indicative of the time invested by our personnel. We know that our volunteers are the backbone of our fire department and each one exhibits a unique blend of dedication, time, and commitment. One of the most demanding activities of being a volunteer is the training involved. And with over 3,000 hours of classroom and skills training accumulated by the LVFD personnel over the course of 2025, we feel that as a united body, we can provide essential services tailored to the unique needs of our communities and stand as a beacon of hope during times of crisis and chaos.

We encourage you to view 2025's statistics along with historical data from the past 34 years. Just follow this link:
