The Center for Asbestos Related Disease Providing advocacy, care, resources and hope
to the community, and all those across the
nation, impacted by Libby Amphibole

CARD is involved in collaborative projects with many prestigious research partners from around the nation. Although patient care is always the number one priority of CARD; the board, staff, and Libby community have embraced the opportunity to promote research activities to further the understanding of Libby amphibole asbestos diseases. It is recognized that research is essential to understand expo

sure risk and to find improved interventions and treatments that will benefit those exposed in Libby and across the nation. CARD's primary research objective is to facilitate effective types of health-related research within the Libby community in a way that will be beneficial and respectful to community members and researchers. CARD and the Libby community realize that “CARD Research is a Community Project”. The time is now to move from Crisis to Cure.

CARD Community Update

Today, CARD issued a press release regarding the future of CARD patient services.
Because CARD’s federal grant funding is not being renewed, CARD is preparing to close patient services at the end of August 2026. CARD intends to continue grant-funded services through August 31, including asbestos health screening, lung cancer screening, case management, outreach, and education, as staffing and time allow.

At this time, CARD will no longer begin long-distance screening services because those services take additional time to process, and we do not want to start services that cannot be completed before closure.

We know this news will raise many questions. Some transition details are still being worked through, including the post-closure process for medical record requests and any future asbestos screening services in Libby. ATSDR has indicated that it plans to make an announcement regarding the Asbestos Screening and Innovation Program continuation later this week. CARD will share additional information as it becomes available.

Patients who would like copies of their medical records are encouraged to request them as soon as possible so CARD has time to process requests with limited staffing. Records will remain available after CARD closes, but the post-closure request process is still being developed.
Please do not post private medical information in the comments.

Questions may be directed to CARD at (406) 293-9274 or in person at 118 W. 3rd Street in Libby during regular office hours, Monday through Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
