This week on our educational series Beyond The Finish Line….War Horses! 🐎🐎
In the Thoroughbred world, the term “war horse” is often used to describe a horse with a long racing career and many starts. While some people may overlook these horses because of the miles they have under them, experienced OTTB riders and retrainers often see something incredibly valuable.
🏇 WHAT MAKES A WAR HORSE SPECIAL?
These horses have years of life experience. They have shipped to different tracks, handled busy environments, adapted to changing routines, and learned how to do a job consistently.
Because of this, many war horses develop:
• Excellent minds
• Strong work ethics
• Adaptability
• Mental toughness
• Professional attitudes under saddle
They have already seen and experienced so much, which can make the transition into second careers smoother for many of them.
💡 MILES DON’T ALWAYS EQUAL DAMAGE
One of the biggest misconceptions is that a horse with many starts is automatically “used up.”
In reality, many war horses stayed in training for years BECAUSE they were durable, sound enough to continue competing, and mentally able to handle the demands of racing.
Every horse is an individual, and the number of starts alone does not determine future success.
RETRAINING LOOKS DIFFERENT
War horses often benefit from time to decompress and adjust to a slower-paced lifestyle after retirement. Many already understand discipline, routine, and carrying a rider — they simply need help learning a new job and using their athleticism in different ways.
With proper conditioning, veterinary care, turnout, and patient retraining, many war horses go on to thrive as sport horses, trail horses, lesson horses, and lifelong partners.
💙 IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:
Sometimes the horses with the most miles also have the biggest hearts.
A war horse’s racing record tells a story of resilience, grit, and determination — and for many OTTB owners, retraining one of these horses into a second career is one of the most rewarding journeys beyond the finish line.
