Our site: soscatsky.org 🐈‍⬛ SOS (Spay Our Strays) is an all-volunteer Trap Neuter Return (TNR) organization servicing Central Kentucky. We educate the community about the importance of TNR and best practices for community cat colony caregivers. We facilitate spay and neuter services for feral, stray, and community cats through our twice weekly clinics at Lexington Humane Society. Since 2010, SOS h

as facilitated over 8,050 spay/neuter surgeries!

80% of kittens born in the United States each year are born to outdoor community cats. TNR is the most humane solution to the cat overpopulation crisis all over the globe. Cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped, recovered in a safe environment, and released back to their original home. The ear tip is a universal sign that a cat has been altered. The cats then have fewer health issues and are no longer be able to reproduce. This results in less homeless cats, less stress on already-crowded animal shelters, and less cause for euthanasia.

The five stages of Wednesdays: sadness, confusion, bargaining, anger, acceptance (staring into the void and waiting for the weekend to finally arrive).

Even though these guys don’t look too happy to see us, we’re very happy to report we TNR’d 10 cats today! 😻 Aside from a couple of minor injuries, which were treated by our awesome partner vet, these kitties are all healthy and ready to be released back to their homes (where they can continue making very entertaining facial expressions).

Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise over $600 on KY Gives Day! 😻

We spayed and neutered 10 cats this week (yay!), and the amount we raised will fully cover all of their spay / neuter surgeries! Your continued support means the world to us and our mission. Fundraising events (like KY Gives Day) and community support make up 100% of the donations that keep us going each and every year. We truly couldn’t do it without you! 🖤

From abandoned kittens fighting to survive, to injured strays in need of urgent medical care, to community cats who simply deserve a safer, healthier future - every cat we help has a story.

Throughout the rest of the day, we’ll be sharing just a few of the many cats we've helped over the past year. Their stories are reminders of why this mission matters so deeply to us and why your support makes such an impact. Any donation - regardless of the amount - makes a difference in the lives of these cats! 🖤

Today is the day… KY Gives Day 2026 is finally here!

Donating to Spay Our Strays directly supports our mission of managing community cat populations through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and helping vulnerable cats get the care they need. Since 2010, with the help of our supporters, we’ve facilitated more than 8,900 spay / neuter surgeries. This year, we’ve already TNR’d nearly 200 cats, and networked rescue placement for 37 at-risk cats and kittens!

Right now, we are covering the cost of clinic appointments for more than 70% of the cats brought to us for care. That means your donations are directly helping community members access lifesaving spay/neuter services they otherwise may not be able to afford, preventing countless future litters and improving the lives of cats all across the Bluegrass.

Every donation - no matter the amount - helps us continue this work. Whether you give enough to help cover vaccines, a spay/neuter surgery, or a bag of cat food, your generosity has a direct impact on cats in need and the people trying to help them. We are deeply grateful for every supporter who believes in our mission and makes what we do possible. The Kentucky Gives Day donation link is open until 11:59 PM tonight, but if you miss the giving window, donations can still be made anytime through PayPal () or Venmo ().

Thank you, from all of us at SOS (kitties included, of course)! 🖤

We were able to TNR 11 kitties today, including these two adorable kittens who were trapped by our amazing volunteers yesterday evening! Both kittens were feral and had already passed the socialization window, so they will be returned to their original home, where their loving caretaker will continue to provide food, shelter, and ongoing monitoring to ensure they stay healthy.

Whenever possible, we always prefer to place kittens with a rescue and help them find safe indoor homes. Unfortunately, the cat overpopulation crisis means this is not always possible. We frequently encounter kittens who are still relatively young, but too old to be socialized, and rescues fill up quickly because of the overwhelming number of kittens in need of homes.

The only way we can break this cycle is by working together to TNR every community cat we come across and ensuring that all pets are spayed and neutered. While one accidental litter may not seem like much, it can quickly contribute to the growing number of homeless cats and kittens in our community.

Every cat we TNR is one more step forward in reducing suffering and creating a healthier, safer future for our beloved community cats. 🐾

We were able to TNR 11 community cats this week! 🐾

Many of these cats were suffering with numerous facial wounds - unfortunately, this is very common for us to see. While many caretakers who bring cats to us prioritize female cats in order to directly stop the breeding cycle (which is very understandable!), we want to emphasize the importance of getting the boys in as well.

Unaltered male cats are very prone to fighting due to hormone-driven territoriality (thanks, testosterone!), which results in the sort of wounds we see here. Neutering is the only effective solution to curb these behaviors - resulting in happier, healthier cats who are at lower risk for incurring injuries and transmitting diseases through deep bite wounds. Neutering also cut downs on other problem behaviors - spraying and roaming, primarily - that can cause distress for both the cat caretaker(s) as well as nearby neighbors.

We’re so happy we were able to get these kitties snipped, tipped, and vaxxed. Contact us today to set up an appointment for your own community cats! ✂️

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the amazing team at Alley Cat Advocates! 🐾

Alley Cat Advocates (based in Louisville) is an incredible organization that provides TNR services and vital community support for cats throughout Jefferson County and in all surrounding areas. They graciously provided us with a tour of their incredible facility and took time to walk us through their process, as well as chat with us about our goals for Spay Our Strays.

We were able to learn so much from them, and we are excited to begin implementing some of their strategies here at SOS! Collaborating and learning from organizations like Alley Cat Advocates (who TNR upwards of 200 cats a week!) is instrumental in allowing us to continue improving the support we provide to cats in our own community.

Thank you again to the team at Alley Cat Advocates - you all are the best!

We were able to spay / neuter and vaccinate 7 (very adorable) kitties this week! 💗

Sometimes the number of unaltered community cats can seem so overwhelming, especially when a colony’s population has been allowed to balloon out of control. We have, admittedly, felt daunted on many occasions! But we’re dedicated to ending the cat overpopulation cycle, one snip (or two) at a time. Even just one cat being altered changes their life for the better, and prevents countless future unwanted litters. We are forever committed to giving these guys a better, healthier future. 🐾

PS Don’t forget to join us at our 3rd annual Valentine’s Day Cat Trivia fundraiser this evening! Fundraisers are one of the main avenues that allow us to continue covering the cost of veterinary care for at-risk cats - your support, no matter the amount, truly does make our work possible! 💗
