This little fella is getting ready to bring a big smile to the face of a homebound senior! He’s the grandson of a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and cheers hearts just by being there! A child’s visit, handmade card, drawing, or smiling face can ease feelings of loneliness. In return, the child gains wisdom, stories, and deeper compassion. These meaningful connections remind seniors that they are valued and still an important part of their community. Because of this dynamic, many parents and grandparents take their children with them when delivering Meals on Wheels, creating multi-generational impact. Deliver Meals on Wheels, call 336.474.2646.

Pictured here are 19 national awards earned by Senior Services volunteers who gave 100+ hours of their time last year to help others. Research done by the US Government and Berkley University show that those who volunteer receive more benefit than those they are helping! It is true that one is more blessed in giving than in receiving. As we help others, we help ourselves. Volunteer today by calling 336.474.2646.

It was a Friday late in January when Meals on Wheels volunteer Cindy Shumate took her two granddaughters with her to deliver Meals on Wheels just outside of Lexington. The girls take pictures they have colored and give them to the clients as they visit each one. One of the stops on their route is an elderly couple, and just four days prior to their arrival the husband came under the care of Hospice. His daughter happened to be present that day when the three of them arrived and thanked both girls for sharing their pictures with her parents! The elderly couple asks about the girls all the time and keep their colorings on their refrigerator year-round. To homebound seniors, children are magical!

Research reveals that seniors who are isolated are at far greater risk for premature dementia and mortality. Visiting homebound seniors makes their minds sharper, helping them to live longer, and thus remain in their own homes as long as possible. Delivering Meals on Wheels is an enjoyable, loving way for you to bring longer life to those around you. Give the gift of happiness by delivering Meals on Wheels. Call 336.474.2646.

I think she is a Hero.
It was Monday December 1, 2025 when I received Chrissy Hedrick’s application to volunteer. The next day I called her and we talked about delivering Meals on Wheels, she told me, “I can deliver meals every week, but I won’t be able to start until January because I am going through cancer treatments and won’t be done until early January." I thought that was the last time I would hear from her…but I was wrong. The picture you see was taken in December when amid her stem cell transplants, she came by the Senior Center for her training.
In late January when one of our weekly drivers had to stop delivering, Chrissy said, “I’m done with my treatments and can deliver every week.” For the next 5 weeks Chrissy delivered meals every Tuesday, enjoying her time helping others. Then on Monday March 30 I received a call from her. “I won’t be able to deliver for a while, my bone scan came back and the cancer is in my bones. I’m going to have to have another transplant, and I won’t be able to deliver for a while, but I will call when I am able to deliver again.” Because of what I had seen over the previous few months, I knew she meant it.
I marvel at our volunteers who, even amid their own difficulties, think of others and volunteer to make their lives a little less painful. I call that heroic.
Join the ranks of Heroes, volunteer today by calling 336.474.2646.

Senior Services has 468 volunteers who care for seniors all over Davidson County. The month of June is Elder Abuse Awareness month, reminding all of us to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. If you see a senior citizen being mistreated or neglected, don’t wait for someone else to do something, you report it and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

For almost 4 decades now Tim Jordan’s family carries out a huge cooking event on Christmas Eve, cooking meat for Christmas the old-fashioned way—preparing pork, beef, chicken, and turkey over wood coals. It is a family project—grandchildren use vacation leave to take off work, so they won’t miss the event which is now in its 4th generation and has orders pouring in from friends and family! Tim’s father started the tradition which has become an event, and he and his brother carry on.
But this tradition reaches beyond family, there’s more… As in previous years, Tim loaded up a take-out tray for each of the people on his Meals on Wheels route and took them enough food to last them through the weekend when Meals on Wheels would not be delivered for five days. Predictably, Tim’s family gained more joy and happiness than those they gave the meals to. Meals on Wheels volunteers are the BEST! Do yourself and our homebound seniors a lot of good by volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels! Call 336.474.2646.
