Baithak Style Concerts:
Year long series of full length Baithak style concerts of traditional Hindustani Classical Music by prominent visiting musicians. Music Appreciation Sessions:
Music can be appreciated in a number of different ways and on a number of different levels. For some people, enjoyment and pleasure is gained purely through the act of listening to music. Appreciating music at this level does not require any musical expertise or close familiarity with the technical elements of music on the part of the listener. This is not to suggest that people with varying degrees of technical knowledge about music do not enjoy it as much or more. In fact, learning about music enriches the listening experience and makes music even more pleasurable. Understanding how music works, learning how it's put together, can indeed enrich the listening experience and make one fully appreciate the finer details of what makes music 'tick'. "One can't develop a better appreciation of the music merely by reading a book about it. If you want to understand music better, you can do nothing more important than actively listen to it." But what does active listening to music actually entail, and how does it differ from simply hearing it? Active listening of music is to become aware of some of the processes; building blocks; that are at work in the music such as Laya, Tala, Swar, Shruti, Raga Structure, Raag Bhav, Improvisation, Stylistics differences between various Gharana’s in terms of development and rendition, Asthetics etc.. The purpose of Music Appreciation sessions is to expose the listeners to some of the technical aspects and subtleties of music through sessions comprising of Lecture Demonstrations, Interviews and conversations with Musicians and recordings.
