D-Day 82nd Anniversary – Honoring the Greatest Generation’s Valor at Normandy 🇺🇸⚓

Today, June 6, marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history that turned the tide of World War II.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in Operation Overlord, beginning the liberation of Europe from N**i tyranny.

The U.S. Navy played a pivotal role, providing massive naval gunfire support, minesweeping, and transporting troops. Under the Western Naval Task Force, American warships—including battleships, cruisers, and destroyers—pounded German defenses, protected the invasion fleet, and enabled the landings on Utah and Omaha beaches. While U.S. submarines were not directly involved in the Normandy beach landings (British midget submarines handled key marking roles), the U.S. Navy’s submarine force contributed vitally to the broader Atlantic campaign by protecting supply lines and tying down enemy resources.

The U.S. Marines brought their legendary fighting spirit, with Marine units and officers embedded in the planning and ex*****on of the assault. Their amphibious expertise helped shape the entire operation.

The U.S. Coast Guard operated under Navy command during the war, crewing many landing craft, providing port security, and ensuring the safe delivery of troops and supplies. Their courage in the face of enemy fire was essential to the success of the landings.

The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine—often called the “fourth arm of defense”—delivered the goods. Hundreds of merchant ships carried troops, vehicles, ammunition, fuel, and critical supplies across the U-Boat-infested Atlantic and right into the invasion zone. Without their heroic logistical effort under constant threat, D-Day simply could not have happened. Eisenhower himself praised their indispensable contribution.

To all the sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Merchant Mariners who served on that fateful day—and to their families—we offer our deepest gratitude. Your sacrifice secured freedom for generations.

Navy League of the United States – Central Kentucky Council proudly stands with those who serve at sea today, just as we honor those who served then.

We remain committed to supporting our Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine, thanks to the steadfast support of our Community Affiliates:
