What an incredible two days in Asheville!

The 2026 Leadership Summit brought together leaders from nearly 60 systems and utilities for meaningful conversations, valuable insights, and innovative ideas shaping the future of our industry.
From presentations by Dave Boliek, North Carolina State Auditor, and Ahmed Rachid El-Khattabi of UNC Chapel Hill's School of Government, to sessions led by Robert White IV of the Alabama Rural Water Association and Elizabeth Biser of Biser Strategies, attendees left inspired and equipped to lead their organizations forward.

Today, water professionals came together in Cary for an important conversation about backflow prevention, cross-connection control, and the critical role these programs play in protecting public health and our drinking water supplies.

A huge thank you to Bob Buddo and JC Lommatzsch with Lewis Marketing and FEBCO/Watts for providing lunch, T-shirts, and education on the importance of backflow prevention. We appreciate your partnership and your continued support of North Carolinaโ€™s water professionals!

We also sincerely thank Rebecca Sodoski and Shawn Guyer with NC Dept of Environmental Quality and Maggie Bowers and Dan Dittman with the NC OSFM for sharing their expertise, answering questions, and helping provide clarity on the issues our utilities are facing.

Recent coordinated cyberattacks targeting more than 30 municipal water systems in Minnesota and additional Water & Waste...

Recent coordinated cyberattacks targeting more than 30 municipal water systems in Minnesota and additional Water & Wastewater Sector partners across at least seven states underscore an urgent need to strengthen OT and IT defenses. These incidents involved unauthorized access to internet-facing operational technology, manipulation of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and forced manual operations in multiple impacted cities. CISA and its Federal partners have warned that threat actors are increasingly targeting water sector control systems, with activity consistent with Iranian-linked groups.

Given this demonstrated, multi-state campaign against water infrastructure, CISA's Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (RVA) is a critical step to identify vulnerabilities, validate defensive measures, and help ensure your utility is not the next victim. The RVA is CISA's most in-depth, hands-on cybersecurity assessment. It combines pe*******on testing, configuration reviews, social engineering, and detection/response evaluations to show exactly how an adversary could compromise your environment and what to fix first.
