South Sudan is Not Always a News Headline for Wars
by
Yasir Arman

"On July 20, 2024, in a historic match, the basketball giants from South Sudan almost snatched a precious victory from the United States team, just as they had previously done with the Chinese team.

"They truly represent both Sudans, Africa and the countries of the Global South, which are symbols of struggle, the quest for new societies and achieving human reconciliation in sports, creativity, and culture. What a delightful friendly match it was, embodying the nobility of sports in forging connections between societies.

"Who told you that the South has nothing to offer the world? And who told you that the South’s stories are only those of wars, tribal conflicts, and complex issues of national building? .......Who said that the malnutrition, lack of adequate healthcare, and the rural-urban divide would prevent the Southerner from standing tall, embracing the ebony and the sky, making his presence known on global television, and liberating basketball from belonging solely to the First World?"

Comment: This was a demonstration match before the Olympics which begin this week. All South Sudanese should be proud of their team and encourage them. Bill

SUDAN
Statement by to the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami

On attack on hospital in Al Fasher, North Darfur State
(Port Sudan, 23 June 2024) – Another day of violence in Sudan brings another human tragedy in Darfur’s Al Fasher.

This time, the person who won’t be going home to their family was a pharmacist. Died when an explosive artillery hit the corner of the hospital where she worked. Killed on the job, prescribing and administering medicine to women, men, and children in a place that should have been safe.

The silencing of the guns is long overdue.

From bullets or bombs, starvation or disease, each soul lost to this senseless war takes Sudan another inexorable step away from what we all want. Peace.

The Muslim Persecution of Christians: A Censored Pandemic, Part 1

05/27/2024 by Raymond Ibrahim

Few phenomena are as widespread as they are virtually unknown — at least in the West — as the worldwide persecution of Christians, especially at the hands of Muslims.

The general facts are undeniable and have been and continue to be documented in a number of reports issued by a variety of human rights organizations around the world.

According to one of the most recent compilations, Open Doors’ “World Watch List, 2024,” which was published in January 2024, and which annually ranks the top 50 nations where Christians are most persecuted for their faith, in 2023, 4,998 Christians around the world — 13 a day — were “killed for faith-related reasons.” Another 4,125 were illegally detained or arrested, and 14,766 churches and other Christian institutions were attacked, many destroyed.

Overall, the global persecution of Christians remains higher than ever, with 365 million believers suffering “high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.” One in seven Christians around the world (14%) is persecuted. In Africa, that number grows to one in five (20%), while in Asia it is as much as two in five — meaning 40% of all Christians are persecuted on that continent.

Iran’s ‘Word’ Is Worthless: Islam Permits Strategic Lying

The Stream Once again, Iran has inadvertently made clear why its true intentions can never be discerned — why its word can never be taken at face value. In February, 2024, Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadiq al-Shirazi’s delivered a sermon, which was followed by a Q&A session. One of the questions subm...

This is particularly sad for me. I knew him about ten years ago when he seemed to be a champion for peace through the youth.

A leading South Sudanese academic and activist living in exile in the United States has been charged in Arizona along with a Utah man born in the African nation on charges of conspiring to buy and illegally export millions of dollars’ worth of weapons to overthrow the government back home.

Promoting Accountability for Transnational Repression Against South Sudanese Nationals Abroad
02/29/2024 05:23 PM EST

Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson

The Department of State is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on multiple South Sudanese nationals directly responsible for the kidnappings of South Sudanese activists abroad and for their involvement in transnational repression. Today’s actions are being taken under the “Khashoggi Ban,” a visa restriction policy pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

These visa restrictions address the ongoing threat the South Sudan Transitional Government poses to South Sudanese activists and dissidents, no matter where they are located. The United States remains concerned about the multiple credible reports of South Sudanese nationals who have been threatened, killed, or kidnapped in neighboring countries, as well as persons who have been forcibly returned to South Sudan to face politically motivated reprisals.

We call on the Government of South Sudan to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections in December, including by ending its targeting and harassment of overseas citizens and by expanding civic space within its borders. We support the people of South Sudan at home and abroad, including those brave individuals working to promote transparency, fight corruption, and advocate for democracy and human rights at such a critical juncture in their country’s history.
