Have you ever looked closely at how horses actually jump over tall fences?

In recognition of the 2026 American Gold Cup this past weekend in Traverse City, check out Show Jumping Hall of Famers Idle Dice and Rodney Jenkins as “Ike” powers over this huge oxer at the 1974 American Gold Cup at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. They won that year, the second of three consecutive Gold Cup victories.

Congratulations!!

JJ Torano of Wellington, FL, has won the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Rider of the Month Award presented by Charles Ancona for August. With Torano’s other titles from January, March, June, and July, this marks the fifth time he has won the award in 2026, breaking his three-month record in 2025 that earned him the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Rider of the Year title.

A talented junior rider, Torano competes in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series East Conference. He continued to pilot his horses to the top of the leaderboard in several member events of the Series, starting with Great Lakes Equestrian Festival 6. There, he placed third and fifth in the $10,000 SJHOF 1.40m Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic with Vitus K and Kung Fu, respectively. At the Hampton Classic, he and Vitus K went on to win the $30,000 Agneta & Brownlee Currey Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic presented by FarmVet and the Currey Family, securing the week’s 1.40m Junior Jumper Championship.

Torano’s consistent partner, Jet Show Stable’s Vitus K, earned the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Horse of the Month Award for August. This marks the third consecutive month Vitus K has earned the award in 2026; he also previously won the title in February 2025.

To cap off their successful Hampton Classic, Torano was named the recipient of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Style of Riding Award. The award is presented annually to the Junior Jumper rider at the Classic who best exemplifies the American style of equitation, as demonstrated by riders such as distinguished Show Jumping Hall of Fame inductees Conrad Homfeld and Joe Fargis.

The recipient of the annual Style of Riding Award exemplifies a true sportsman’s respectful, dignified, courteous and workmanlike manner. Torano was selected for this year’s award by the Hampton Classic’s jumper judges and other key personnel as the Best Junior Jumper Rider of the week.

The Show Jumping Hall of Fame conducts its Jumper Classic Series with classes at approximately 80 horse shows each year. The Series hosts classes for junior and amateur riders at both 1.40-1.45m and 1.30-1.35m in two Conferences – the East Conference and the West Conference. The Series culminates in Championship Finals for both divisions in the fall – the West Finals are held October 14-18 at the Temecula Valley Fall 3, and the East Finals are held November 25-29 at the Holiday & Horses CSI4* at Wellington International. The winners of the Finals all receive complimentary admission to the Hall of Fame’s annual Induction Ceremony and Awards Gala in Wellington in March, during which they are honored for their achievements.

Each month, the Series honors the one rider and one horse that earn the most points in Series competition that month. For year-end awards, the Series recognizes each conference’s Leading Rider and Leading Horse. Each year-end award winner receives an engraved Tiffany crystal trophy and complimentary admission to the Hall of Fame’s annual Induction Ceremony and Awards Gala in Wellington in March, during which they are honored for their achievements.

Did you know that North America’s biggest September Grand Prix events were won by Show Jumping Hall of Famers Michael Matz and Beezie Madden on the same horse, Judgement ISF?

Michael Matz and Judgement won the 1999 American Gold Cup at the Devon showgrounds just before Michael retired from Show Jumping. On Michael’s recommendation, Beezie got the ride on Judgement, and they won the $1,000,000 CN International at the Spruce Meadows Masters in 2005, the richest single Grand Prix at that time.

Judgement was talented and versatile: he also won Jumper derbies, speed events, and six-bar classes. Judgement passed away in 2021 just before his 30th birthday.

Congratulations to JJ Torano and his mount, Jet Show Stable’s Vitus K, the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Rider of the Month and Horse of the Month for July.

This is the second consecutive month that Torano, of Wellington, FL, and Vitus K, a 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding, have won the Rider and Horse of the Month awards.

Torano also won the title in January and March, following his record-setting 2025 season when he also earned the award three times and was named the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Rider of the Year.

A talented junior rider, Torano competes in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series East Conference. His successful summer continued into July with top performances at the I Love New York Horse Show in Lake Placid. There, he finished in sixth and eighth place in the $10,000 Grandview Lake Placid 1.35m SJHOF Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic with Kochio Z and Mr. Worldwide, respectively; he also earned 10th and 12th in the $15,000 Horseflight 1.45m SJHOF Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic with D&H Q Paravatti N and Kung Fu.

A week later, he kicked off his stay at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival with victory in Week 2’s 1.45m SJHF Classic aboard Vitus K.

During Week 3, he returned to the top of the leaderboard in the 1.35m SJHF Classic, this time riding Casanova Z, and took second- and eighth-place honors aboard Mr. Worldwide and Capolino, respectively; he also finished sixth (Kung Fu), eighth (D&H Q Paravatti N) and ninth (Quinci Quality) in the 1.45m Classic.

During Week 4, Torano claimed five of the top 10 spots in the 1.45m Classic, repeating his win with Vitus K and earning third (Casanova Z), sixth (Mr. Worldwide), seventh (Kung Fu) and ninth (Capolino).

And just last week, Torano and Lyon 50 won the STAWAG Prize Speed Competition at CSIY-Aachen!

As showjumping at the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026 gets underway this week, take a look back to 2006, the last time Aachen hosted the championships (then called the World Equestrian Games).

Beezie Madden (class of 2021) and Authentic (class of 2017) won Individual Silver and Team Silver --with Laura Kraut/Miss Independent, McLain Ward/Sapphire, and Margie Engle/Hidden Creek’s Quervo Gold.

And the next year, Beezie and Authentic won the Grand Prix at the 2007 CHIO Aachen, earning Authentic a star in the Aachen Walk of Fame.

Beezie was the fourth woman to top the podium of this signature class, which was first held in 1927.

(England's Liz Edgar was the first female winner, with Forever in 1980; SJ Hall of Famers Anne Kursinski and Starman won in 1991; Germany's Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Shutterfly won in 2005.)

As we get closer to this year's World Championships: Here's another dip into the archives about early U.S. medal winners and variations in the FEI World Championships format through the decades.

The 1978 Championships at Aachen, Germany—site of this year’s Championships—included a Team Competition for the first time.

The U.S. team of Dennis Murphy on Tuscaloosa, Buddy Brown on Viscount, and Show Jumping Hall of Famers Michael Matz on Jet Run (left) and Conrad Homfeld on Balbuco (right) earned the Team Bronze. Matz and Jet Run finished with the Individual Bronze.

Fun Fact: Homfeld and Matz would be back at Aachen for the 1986 World Championships to help win Team Gold. Details to come . . .

In the run-up to next month's FEI World Cup Champtionships 2026 Aachen, we’ve got another moment from the archives about early U.S. medal winners and variations in the World Championships format through the decades.

The 1974 Championships at Hickstead, England, have always been referred to as the Men’s World Jumping Championships—as parallel to the 1974 Ladies’ World Jumping Championship in La Baule, France. Show Jumping Hall of Famers Frank Chapot and Main Spring finished with the Individual Bronze in the "final four" format. This was last year that the men's and women's championships were separate competitions.

Fun Facts: The following week, Chapot and Main Spring won the King George V Cup in London. In the 1960s, the U.S. Equestrian Team published postcards to promote the Team members
