As Junior week at the Devon Horse Show gets underway, did you know that Sandsablaze (class of 2024) excelled in the Jumper, Hunter, and Equitation rings?

In 1972, five-year-old Sandsablaze and owner/rider Buddy Brown competed in the Junior Jumpers at Devon, and went on to win the 1973 AHSA Medal Finals.

Not long out of the junior ranks, Buddy and Sandasblaze were selected for the US Equestrian Team and proceeded to win the 1974 Grand Prix of Dublin, the 1975 Cleveland Grand Prix, and Team Gold at the 1975 Pan Ams before competing in the 1976 Olympics.

Returning to the show ring after resting from an injury at the Olympics, Sandsablaze placed fourth in the Hunter Classic at Lake Placid in 1977 before heading back to the Grand Prix arena.

The new exhibit celebrating the Hall of Fame at the USHJA Wheeler Museum, "Show Jumping Hall of Fame: Legends and Traditions" is open!

And, it's May, so it's time to talk about Devon! What better way to honor the first horse inducted into the Hall of Fame, the great Idle Dice (class of 1987):

Before the Grand Prix became the premier event of the Jumper ring, a Jumper division’s “Stake Class” was the capstone event offering the top prize money and prestige. For years at the Devon Horse Show, the Saturday Open Jumper Stake was the highlight and last class of the show.

The legendary Rodney Jenkins (class of 1999) and Idle Dice were frequent winners of the Saturday stake, and often Open Jumper champion, throughout the 1970s. The class has since been named “The Idle Dice Open Jumper Stake.”

If you are near the Kentucky Horse Park, check out the exhibit at the United States Hunter Jumper Association - USHJA headquarters, Wed-Fri 9am-4pm. Stay tuned for photos and more to come online . . .
