“I was hoping for that kind of challenge, and I definitely got it and learned a lot through the process.”

Throughout her 4 years at VMI, Cadet Sadie Smith ’26 has embraced every challenge that has come her way and emerged stronger on the other side. Not only did she come to VMI seeking challenge, but she also says she “appreciates the privilege to struggle.”

“It’s just so different, and I’m just so thankful for being able to be at a place like this.”

As a 1st Class cadet, Smith serves as Company H commander and water polo team captain. Previously, she served as cadre corporal and then cadre sergeant, giving her ample practice at leadership during her cadetship. When asked about her transformation from rat to 1st Class cadet, Smith credits those around her with getting her where she is today. “If I looked back 4 years ago, I would not think I would be water polo captain, company commander, ... have such high academic standing ... but I couldn’t do it by myself. It’s been everyone around me who’s held me up and supported me: My coach, professors, my roommates, best friends, Hotel company.”

Soon, Smith will graduate with a degree in international studies and minors in computer science and national security. “I feel very prepared,” she confirmed. “Very well prepared for life ahead.”
