Retiring a Thoroughbred takes more than simply moving the horse to a new home.

One important step helps protect the horse’s future: completing the Transferred as Retired from Racing process through The Jockey Club Registry.

When this process is completed, the Thoroughbred’s certificate is marked inactive, helping ensure the horse cannot race again.

More than 7,200 Thoroughbreds have already been recorded as retired from racing.

If you’ve recently sold, adopted out, or rehomed a Thoroughbred—or have one nearing retirement—consider completing the process.

Ever wondered how the industry ensures our equine athletes are running on safe track conditions? 🏇

The Racing Surfaces Testing Lab (RSTL) coordinates and carries out on-site and laboratory testing of racetrack surfaces, providing real-time and summary weather data, daily measurements, and a brief summary of data from pre-meet and seasonal inspections. 🔍

RSTL provides services for 87 racetracks across the United States. 🌎

Some of this data goes back as long as 20 years!

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that accredits ✅, inspects 🔍, and awards 🏅grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industrywide funding.

Funded initially by seed money from Breeders' Cup Ltd., The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has granted more than $40.74 million to accredited aftercare organizations, aiding 20,000 Thoroughbreds coming off the track.
