Join us TODAY from 5pm-7pm for a Live Henry Faulkner Mural Paint Party!

The Faulkner Morgan Archive is excited to announce the creation of a new LGBTQ mural in downtown Lexington! This new mural will be the first piece of public artwork or landmark in the U.S. dedicated to the life and legacy of Henry Faulkner.

Come to 139 W Short St (near Church St) and watch Wylie Caudill Art working on the mural live! We will be joined by the Olmeda's Food Truck as well as the Country Boy Brewing b**r trailer. https://www.facebook.com/share/19ytoQyMZe/

The design for the mural is a mix of Henry’s paintings and Wylie’s personal style combined with a design from Cricket Press created for FMA in 2023!

The wall set aside for the mural sirs right around the corner from the mural of Sweet Evening Breeze, “The Mother of Us All,” by Gaia. That mural was the first piece of public art in Lexington dedicated to an LGBTQ Individual. This mural of Henry Faulkner will be the second. Placing these two murals in close proximity to each other is deeply meaningful as Sweets housed Henry when he was a young, gay man. Together, these murals will speak to their relationship and the incredible impact and legacy that the pair had on Lexington’s LGBTQ community

This mural was made possible due to generous support from LexArts and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, and assistance from PRHBTN .

We are honored to celebrate the legend herself, Chelsea Pearl through a performance by Jenna Jive! ⭐️

Chelsea Pearl began her drag journey in Lexington in 1982, where she performed at venues such as The Country, Café LMNOP, Great Moments, The Bar Complex, and The Circus Disco, the latter being where she entered her first pageant. A fact known to few is that Renee Alexander was Chelsea’s original drag mother, though that title was soon inherited by the legendary Jeanette “Juice” Wylde, whose guidance helped shape the performer, competitor, and mentor Chelsea would become. What started as a passion soon became a remarkable career that spanned decades, cities, and generations.

After becoming one of Lexington’s “it girls” alongside fellow legend Andrea Lauren, Chelsea made Indianapolis her home in the late 1980s. There, she became a celebrated fixture at the 21 Club, The Ten, and Club Cabaret while building a pageantry legacy that few could match. Few things brought Chelsea greater pride than the USofA system, which she championed throughout her life as a competitor, promoter, mentor, and preliminary owner.... Introducing one of our featured performers, the one and only Lady M! ⭐️

Lady M was born in Berkley, West Virginia. She came to Lexington by way of Bowling Green, Kentucky. As Empress 23 for the Imperial Court of Kentucky, she worked tirelessly raising money for various charities. Lady M was also a cast member at the infamous Club 141.

Introducing one of our featured performers, the Show Girl of the Midwest LaNora Takie! ⭐️

LaNora Takie hails from Indianapolis, Indiana and is Miss Old Street DIVA 2025! Taking the stage in 1979, LaNora is a seasoned gal in the Drag World and has been in the business for 47 years. She has been performing in Lexington for 10 years now, she has performed at Crossings, The Bar Complex and Eppings! She is the drag sister of Chelsea Pearl and daughter of Marcus Sumner. At 71.5 years old she has Entertained around the Midwest, becoming known as the Show Girl of the Midwest and has recently included a Stevie Nicks impersonation, into her repertoire. Fun fact: She is an Irish-Hillbilly and a Tomboy at heart!

Introducing one of our featured performers, the legendary LaToya BaCall! ⭐️

In the mid 1970’s, LaToya met her drag mother, Gloria BaCall while attending Morehead State University (great school name). She was introduced to drag on the Driftwood Show Lounge stage in Huntington, West Virginia where they both performed in numerous shows and pageants. In the late 80’s/early 90’s, LaToya got her 2nd drag wind in Lexington where she met her drag granny the Legendary Leigh Angelique. LaToya’s drag homes quickly became The Bar Complex and Club 141. She had the opportunity to work with icons like Lauren Wells, Janel Claiborne, Lady M, Rayna Starr, Devina Littrell, Crystal Diamond, Karen Kollette, Natalie Gaye, Jenna Jive, Mya Pinion, Eden Towers, Ashley Kruiz, Cammie Dietrich, Jeanette Wilde, Chelsea Pearl and a host of others.

LaToya won numerous local, state and regional drag pageants including 3 National Drag Titles: Miss National At Large; Miss Gay USofA Classic and All American Goddess Emeritus. Over the years, she has been fortunate to travel across the country and meet some fabulous people. LaToya’s proudest accomplishment has been being able to use her platform for HIV/AIDS Awareness and Education and Diversity Education and Inclusion. Her drag journey continues to be incredible…

Happy LGBTQ History Month!! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

For FMA, growth is about more than getting bigger. It means preserving stories that might otherwise disappear. It means creating opportunities for young people to see themselves within Kentucky history. It means helping researchers uncover stories that have too often been overlooked. And it means ensuring that LGBTQ Kentuckians know that their lives are an essential part of our Commonwealth’s story.

Make sure to join us as we continue to share Kentucky’s LGBTQ history through events, programs, and exhibitions all month long! Check out these 1990s images from our collections as well.
