Did you know that there are currently 5 LGBTQ Historic Markers located in Kentucky?🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

On June 3, 2018, FMA helped unveil Historic Marker 2539 in front of the historic Bar Complex, the first to commemorate Kentucky’s LGBTQ history. Marker 2545 was also unveiled that day in honor of Jeffrey Wasson who helped overturn Kentucky’s anti-gay so**my law.

The following year (2019) Kentucky unveiled a third LGBTQ Historic Marker, 2595, honoring the 20th anniversary of the 1999 passage of Lexington's Fairness Ordinance.

In 2024, Louisville's Gay Liberation Front was memorialized in Historic Marker 2652 near St. James Ct. and Belgravia Ct.

Most recently, in 2025, a fifth LGBTQ Historic Marker, 2669, was dedicated in Kentucky. This one—located in Wi******er, KY—honors the life and of Dr. John E. Fryer, also known as Dr. Anonymous.

Central to our work at FMA is ensuring that Kentucky’s LGBTQ history is not just preserved and archived on its own, but shared, celebrated, and understood as a part of the state’s history as a whole. These historic markers help us to do just that!

In November of 1992, the first edition of The Pink Pages was released at an event at a la Lucie's restaurant (159 N Limestone, Lexington, KY). The Pink Pages were a directory of businesses and services in Central Kentucky that welcomed LGBTQ patrons. It was originally developed, printed, written, and published by members of the Diversity Business Coalition. 💖🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Many of these issues were created during a time before the Fairness Ordinance. One issue even reads "Remember in the state of Kentucky, it is still legal for an employer to fire an employee simply because they are a gay or le***an person. It is legal in the state of Kentucky for a restaurant to refuse to serve a customer simply because they are a gay or le***an person. In the state of Kentucky, it is legal to refuse housing to a paying tenant simply because they are a gay or le***an person." The Pink Pages were an important way for members of the LGBTQ community to find employers, housing, restaurants, and shops that would not discriminate against them.

The Pink Pages were later published by The Gay and Le***an Services Organization (GLSO) as a way to fund their Pride Center. There was a pause in publishing during the mid-2000s and 2010s. It was then revived by the Pride Community Services Organization (PSCO, formerly GLSO) as The Bluegrass Pink Pages from 2017-2019.
These pages are full of the many organizations and businesses that have long served Central Kentucky's LGBTQ community, including many of those that no longer exist. They exist as important records of Kentucky's ✨
