UK Kentucky Children's Hospital
•
Makenna David left an indelible influence on children’s care at the UK Chandler Hospital. Makenna died of a rare lung disease in 1998, just a few months before her second birthday. While this tragedy will forever leave a mark of sadness, her parents – Sheila and Greg David – have used it to honor their daughter through the Makenna Foundation.
With generous support from the foundation, the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center was established in 2010 at Kentucky Children’s Hospital to provide specialized care for children in an environment that meets their unique needs. Physicians here are board certified in emergency medicine and the emergency medicine staff is specially trained in pediatrics.
This allows the center to treat all types of pediatric emergencies in an environment specifically created for the safety and relaxation of children.
The Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center, which is the only dedicated pediatric emergency department in Central and Eastern Kentucky, has also been verified as a Pediatric Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

🎉 Congratulations on 25 years of service to the community and the Commonwealth! 🎉
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has officially proclaimed Tuesday, Aug. 23, as Kentucky Children's Hospital Day!
KCH is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. Thank you to the city of Lexington for recognizing its past and continued dedication to the healthcare needs of Kentucky's kids and their families.

On August 23, UK Kentucky Children's Hospital (KCH) will celebrate its 25th anniversary of serving the children of the Commonwealth. The hospital has grown since 1997, in both physical capacities and in the types of specialty care for every child, from infants to young adults.
According to Physician-in-Chief Scottie B. Day: “Before KCH, families would have to travel hours, sometimes to other states, to get the help their kids needed,” said Day. “This is a place that centers on family care, and keeping families together and close to home is essential to care and healing.”
The annual Mini Pro-Am tournament for patients of Kentucky Children's Hospital (KCH) was first held in 2018 in association with the PGA Barbasol Championship in nearby Nicholasville, and has become a favorite tradition for former patients and current outpatients of KCH.
Pint-sized putters, assisted by volunteer "caddies," tested their skills on a nine-hole course in the Central Bank Club of Kroger Field. Cheering them along were PGA golfers Derek Ernst, Fabian Gomez, Gavin Kyle Green, Michael Lorenzo-Vera, John Merrick, Niklas Norgaard Moller, Andres Romero, Joel Stalter and Oliver Wilson, as well as UK coaches and student-athletes.
KCH is one of the beneficiaries of the Barbasol Championship, this year being held July 7-10 at Champions at Keene Trace Golf Club. The tournament will broadcast live each day on Golf Channel and is one of only 45 regular-season tournaments before the FedEx Cup Playoffs. PGA Tour events generated more than $2.65 billion for charity, including more than $125,000 for Kentucky Children's Hospital.

Makenna Lee David was born on April 4, 1997, to Sheila and Greg David in Lexington, Kentucky. Makenna was a wonderful child, full of life, love and energy. She enjoyed playing with her sister and brother, Kelli and Dayne, and brought joy to everyone.
In December 1997, at 8 months old, Makenna suffered a series of strokes and spent several weeks in the hospital. Medical experts from around the country informed the David family that their precious baby would likely not survive and if she did, she would never be able to care for herself. However, Makenna proved them wrong and made a recovery. She was back home with her family the Saturday before Christmas.
In August 1998, Makenna began experiencing breathing difficulties. In early November in search of a diagnosis, Makenna and her parents traveled to Houston. While she was a patient at Texas Children’s Hospital, Makenna visited a three-dimensional wall that proved to be a welcome distraction for her and the other young patients. Makenna found the wall’s brightly colored tiles captivating and fell in love with them.
After returning home in late November, Makenna was diagnosed with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease, a rare lung disorder. At the time of her diagnosis there had only been 125 similar cases and all had been fatal. On December 4, 1998, Makenna died—four months shy of her second birthday.
Although they were devastated at her loss, Sheila and Greg David remembered Makenna’s love for the tile wall in Texas. They wanted to build a similar wall of color and happiness in Kentucky, in Makenna’s memory. With the help of friends, they established the Makenna Foundation. In September 2001, Janice Mueller, owner of RE/MAX Creative Realty, presented Sheila and Greg David with corporation papers for the new foundation.
The Davids’ dream of creating Makenna’s Wall became a reality when it was unveiled on August 1, 2003, at the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. This vibrant piece of artwork is a huge mural of cheerful tiles, painted by local schoolchildren.
The Makenna Foundation has continued to grow and give to this wonderful hospital. A pediatric bronchoscope was purchased in 2003, and in 2004 funds from the Foundation helped to renovate the Children’s Sedation Suite. In 2006, the Junior League of Lexington renovated the Toddler Room in honor of the Makenna Foundation. The Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center opened in 2010.
