BREAKING: Bouvry Exports Alberta—once Canada's largest horse slaughterhouse—has closed for good!

After months of rumours, the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition has confirmed that the notorious facility has stopped accepting horses for slaughter.

This closure follows years of illegal cruelty to horses. In 2010, hidden-camera footage showed what appeared to be conscious horses having their throats cut while they were hung upside down. In 2023, Animal Justice filed a legal complaint after an investigation showed dead horses strewn about Bouvry's property, & many horses suffering from illnesses & injuries.

In 2025, Bouvry was convicted & fined just $17k after 12 charges were laid by the CFIA, mostly tied to animal suffering. The company reached a plea deal & pleaded guilty to a single paperwork-related offence. Its licence had also been suspended in 2022 over food safety concerns.

Yea sure... you think youre doing good but youre not. The truth of the matter is the more horses are removed from things that give everyday ppl a chance to be closer to them than seeing them in pictures or pastures it adds to the number of horses sent to the slaughter pipeline. Because there is no connection, no intrest.. means out of sight our of mind thinking takes over. Horses that once gave a chance for someone to become interested in horses through a carragie ride end up on feed lots waiting to die. Fall through the cracks into sale barns that see money not a life so there is no care to the kill buyers at sales. You want the horses treated better then do better as the humans by them. Care for them dont condeem them. I say all this as a life long Equestrain that has been fighting against the slaughter pipeline since I was 16 now Im days just past turning 44. And still see humans good intentions become one too many horses death sentence.
