St. Vincent de Paul grew up the son of a peasant farmer in southwestern France, ordained a priest in his early twenties. A chance encounter with rural poverty in a small village changed the direction of his ministry entirely, he spent the rest of his life organizing practical, hands-on care for the poor, the sick, and the abandoned. Through these efforts he was made as the Patron Saint of Charity.
