Summary of the new rules update:
New US Figure Skating Rule Updates for 2026–27 (Parents & Skaters Guide)
US Figure Skating has released several updates for the 2026–27 season, and some of them will affect how programs are built and judged. Here’s a simple breakdown so parents, skaters, and coaches know what’s changing.
1. “Well-Balanced Track” Has a New Name
The track previously known as Well-Balanced is now called the Championship Track.
Same pathway, just a new name you’ll see in rulebooks and competition announcements.
2. The Euler Jump Has Changed
The Euler jump no longer has a base value and does not count as a listed jump in combinations.
Example:
Before: 1A + Eu + 2S = three jumps
Now: The Euler is treated more like a connecting step between jumps.
3. Step Sequences Expanded at Lower Levels
Skaters can now achieve higher levels on step sequences:
• Juvenile: up to Level 2
• Intermediate: up to Level 3
This encourages stronger skating skills earlier in development.
4. Jump Combination Limits (All Levels)
Programs may now include:
Two jump combinations
OR
One jump combination + one jump sequence
This helps keep programs balanced.
5. Free Skate Updates for Novice, Junior & Senior
Important changes for Championship Track Free Skate programs:
• Maximum 6 jumps total
• The same jump type can appear no more than three times
• Choreographic spin is required
• Flying spin is required
A flying spin means:
Flying entrance
No change of foot
No change of position
6. Judges & Coaches: Check the Correct Documents
Important resources include:
2026–27 Championship Track program charts
Domestic Calling Clarifications (includes new Euler addendum)
Technical Notifications 322, 323 & 324
The 2025–26 GOE and Program Component marking guides remain in effect for now.
Pairs & Ice Dance Update
Pairs and Ice Dance will continue using the 2025–26 requirements until May 18, 2026.
Updated rules for those disciplines are expected in April.
Bottom Line
The biggest changes for this season include:
New name: Championship Track
Euler jump no longer scores
Higher step sequence levels at Juvenile & Intermediate
Clearer jump combination limits
Updated spin requirements at higher levels
These changes help simplify judging and encourage stronger skating skills as athletes move up the competitive ladder.
Coaches and competitors: Make sure you're using the 2026–27 program requirement charts when planning programs for the upcoming season.
