Couldn’t have said it better, Down Syndrome Association of the Upstate, SC!

After today’s flood of commentary about Down syndrome and the value of those with DS, we’d like to offer a simple reminder:

People with Down syndrome are living full, meaningful lives and enriching the lives of those around them. Let’s continue sharing facts, challenging outdated assumptions, and celebrating the value of every person.

Join us for our newest Ages & Stages! Addressing Regulation before Expectation: The need for understanding and addressing the sensory system.

Wednesday June 17, 2026, 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST

Register here! > https://bit.ly/NDSC-Ages-Stages

Regulation is the body's ability to take in just the right amount of information from the outside world and process it accordingly. It enables an individual to access higher-level executive function skills, attention to task, motor planning, feeding, articulation, and language skills. Many individuals with the diagnosis of Down syndrome have difficulty in one or more of their sensory systems, which impacts their ability to communicate, participate, and react appropriately to stimulation from the environment. In this session, the eight different sensory systems will be discussed, and parents and caregivers will learn about the importance of addressing the sensory system to obtain an appropriate arousal level and state of regulation to maximize an individual's potential and achieve success. Parents and caregivers will learn how to identify the state of arousal and will be given activities to use at home.
