Asphalt Institute engineers shared their expertise with audiences across the country last week.

Tempe, Arizona: Dr. Mark S. Buncher, Ph.D, P.E.., Vice President of Engineering, spoke at the Longitudinal Joints for Asphalt Pavements Workshop hosted by the Southwest Pavement Technology Consortium at Arizona State University. ASU also recognized Mark ahead of his upcoming retirement with a few university souvenirs as a token of appreciation.

Edison, New Jersey: Greg Harder presented on thick lift paving to the New Jersey Society of Asphalt Technologists and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Laramie, Wyoming: Dave Johnson, P.E. and Dr. Jhony Habbouche, Ph.D., P.E. discussed highly polymer-modified asphalt binders and mixtures at the Rocky Mountain Asphalt User Producer Group Fall Meeting.

🏆 We will honor Tim O'Connell of Ingevity with the Asphalt Institute Distinguished Service Award at the meeting in Bonita Springs, Florida. This distinction recognizes leadership and significant contributions to the asphalt industry. With more than 40 years in the asphalt industry, O'Connell has extensive experience in asphalt emulsions, polymer-modified asphalt and terminal formulation. He has contributed to industry technical work and knowledge-sharing throughout his career.

Asphalt Institute leadership joined our European partners at the 2026 Eurobitume Autumn Meeting & Seminar in Amsterdam this week.

President Reed Ryan shared an update on the work of the Asphalt Institute and the Asphalt Institute Foundation. 2026 Asphalt Institute Chair Seth Hankowski, 2026 Asphalt Institute Foundation Chair Kevin McGlumphy and Vice President of Industry Stewardship Paul Sohi also attended the meeting and represented our association.

Asphalt Institute’s Dr. Mark Buncher and Dr. Jhony Habbouche attended the Consortium for Asphalt Pavement Research and Implementation (CAPRI) Fall 2026 Meeting, hosted by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) in Columbus last week.

The meeting included technical discussions and a tour of a reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) management facility.

Habbouche serves as secretary of CAPRI’s Executive Committee, a role Buncher previously held. Habbouche also chairs a Project Oversight Panel and leads a research project evaluating reheating and aging adjustment factors. The work supports the use of Balanced Mix Design in quality assurance testing.

In 1966, roller operator Rudolph Kinney won a bumper sticker design contest sponsored by the California Asphalt Pavement Association.

The Asphalt Institute's Pacific Coast Division funded production, and his winning design stating "Asphalt - The Only Way To Pave" was soon on bumpers across the state.

A new independent, peer-reviewed study from UC Riverside found that asphalt pavement emissions are more than 250 times lower than earlier estimates suggested and that measured emissions come from the pavement surface, not the bulk asphalt material. This research, a collaboration between the Asphalt Institute, National Asphalt Pavement Association(NAPA), Eurobitume, and State Asphalt Pavement Associations, Inc. (SAPA), gives transportation agencies, policymakers, and communities accurate, real-world data on asphalt pavement and air quality.

Certified technicians produce more consistent test results, reducing retesting, penalties and disputes. NBTC is fully reciprocal with the Northeast Transportation Training and Certification Program, which shares the same text, lectures and exams.
