On Saturday, February 24th Berea College, in Berea, KY, hosted a National TRiO Day conference for all Kentucky TRiO affiliated programs. This conference focused primarily on the celebration of the 8 federally funded TRiO programs and served as a way to rally support for students participating in these programs. The services of TRiO programs stretch from middle school all the way to adult learners (college students). TRiO programs are can be found nationwide. These programs work to provide resources, academic support, financial literacy education, and targeted counseling/mentorship to students from a wide–range of disadvantaged backgrounds. Students, who participate in these programs, are afforded the opportunity to build a network of support to assist them in becoming successful in their educational and professional pursuits.

The University of Kentucky Students Support Services Program in partnership with the First–Generation Living and Learning Community (LLC) participated in the poster session with “Mentorship” being the topic of choice. Two young women pictured from left to right (Whitney Clifford and Shania Goble) were the poster representatives/presenters. Both of these young ladies are current peer mentors in the first–gen LLC, Robinson Scholarship Program recipients, and students of the SSS program. The two young women placed first in the poster session with their poster titled “Supporting First–Generation College Students: Peer Mentoring in a Living and Learning Community”.
