The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment

The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment We exist to make life better for individuals with autism and their families. For more information, please visit unumbcenter.org.

The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment serves as the Midlands community resource for individuals with autism and their families. Our mission is to help individuals with autism reach their full potential by providing comprehensive, evidence-based services and collaborative solutions for the needs of the autism community. Our founders, Dan and Lorri Unumb, began their autism advocacy journey around t

he globe over 15 years ago. Their passion to help families who could not afford treatment inspired them to author “Ryan’s Law,” passed in 2007. Named in honor of their son, the law required health insurance to cover autism treatment and ignited a national autism insurance movement. In 2010, they joined forces with other concerned parents and youth development professionals to create the Autism Academy of South Carolina. In 2019, it was renamed The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment in honor of the family’s contributions to the autism community. The Unumb Center strives to empower individuals with autism to reach new milestones. Current services include: applied behavior analysis, diagnostic testing and assessments, individual and family therapy, behavioral feeding therapy, social skills training, summer programming, parent and toddler groups, and job training (new in 2021).

Our founder, Lorri Shealy Unumb, recently spoke at the Lexington Women’s Leadership Council quarterly luncheon, sharing her journey through her son’s autism diagnosis, the lack of services available to him and other families, and the fight that led to legislation named in his honor to support autism families across South Carolina and beyond.

We were so glad to have the whole Unumb family, along with several members of our team, there to hear Lorri share this powerful story of turning challenges into change.

Thank you to the Lexington Women’s Leadership Council for the opportunity to share Lorri’s story and the importance of continued advocacy! 💙

Water Wednesdays are back! ☀️

Yesterday, our clients enjoyed our very first Water Wednesday at our new space! 💙
Water Wednesdays are one of our favorite summer traditions, giving clients the chance to cool off, play, and enjoy the outdoors through fun, supervised water activities.

We had a fantastic first Water Wednesday and can't wait for many more sunny Wednesdays filled with smiles, splashes, and summer fun! 🌊😎

Our new Sensory Garden is now in full bloom! 🌿✨

Designed to encourage exploration, discovery, and connection with nature, this beautiful outdoor space offers a rich sensory experience for our clients. The garden is filled with a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and plants, providing endless opportunities to engage with different sights, textures, scents, and sounds. 🌱🍅🌸

From tending to growing plants to relaxing beside the soothing fountain, clients can enjoy a peaceful environment that supports learning, curiosity, and sensory exploration.

A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Kim, whose vision, creativity, and dedication brought our Sensory Garden to life. From the initial idea to the final touches, she thoughtfully planned every detail and worked alongside parent volunteers to create a space that will inspire curiosity, learning, and joy for years to come. We are incredibly grateful for Mrs. Kim’s leadership and the support of our wonderful parent volunteers, whose hard work and commitment made this beautiful garden a reality. 💚🌿

Last Thursday and Friday, our team came together for professional development days as we prepared for an exciting new chapter at our new Lexington location!

Between packing & unpacking, organizing, and getting our new space ready for the individuals and families we serve, we also took some time on Friday afternoon for some team bonding at Craft Axe Throwing! 🪓

A huge thank you to our incredible staff for their hard work, flexibility, and dedication throughout this transition. From helping make our move a success to showing up each day with passion and purpose, we are grateful for everything they do. We couldn't do it without this amazing team! 💙

A big thank you to Davis Orthodontics for supporting The Unumb Center for Neurodevelopment during Autism Acceptance Month! 💙

Throughout April, patients participated in the “Go Blue” initiative by choosing blue “o-ties” and power chains at their appointments, with Davis Orthodontics donating $5 for every person who participated and Dr. Davis matching the final donation total! 🎉
