…and the Natalie’s Sisters’ Story
Club Outreach began in 2000 through contacts with a family member who worked as a bouncer. When we asked how we could best help the ladies, he said everybody could use a good, home-cooked meal. Soon enough we had a team of women providing food, and a small but dedicated team of women with a heart to go into the clubs. For 25+ years, weekly visits to the clubs have allowed us to develop true relationships. When people ask, “Why are you here?” We let them know God loves us, we love them, and we just want to help. Women respond because they know we care. In 2011, we felt God calling us to do more, so we prayed for a solid year. January 1, 2012, one of the women we’d served in the clubs was murdered. She’d moved from the clubs to online escorting and street prostitution. The phone call about her death solidified our next step. We met with local police to see how we could best help women working on the street. We began weekly street outreach and police partners were instrumental in introducing us to a broader population of women who needed help. Since that time, the ministry continues to evolve. We still deliver to clubs every week and outreach continues in jail and in targeted neighborhoods where street-level prostitution is centered. To provide a stable location for women to receive help and experience healthy community, we operate a daytime Drop-in center in the East End of Lexington. In addition to providing food and other physical needs, we’re often blessed to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, and other special events. Much of our time is spent making critical community resource referrals. All our Sisters have experienced trauma of some kind: childhood s*xual abuse, r**e, physical abuse, trafficking. And when a woman is ready to make significant life change, we assist with referrals to community resources including mental health, detox and recovery programs. As some say, we play the long game. While we often see God at work (miracles of change in women’s lives, families reuniting, women celebrating sobriety, etc.), we don’t always get to see the results ourselves. But we prayerfully serve, knowing God is allowing us to plant seeds! In 2017, one of the first women we met in the clubs in 2000 was baptized—we’d been praying for her for 17 years!
