Behind every badge is a family. ๐๐ค
When a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty, like Columbia Police Department, SC Officer Delong, we rightfully surround their family and their agency with support. But there are other families hurting too.
There are spouses who hug their officer a little tighter before they leave for their next shift.
There are children who suddenly understand that when Mom or Dad puts on that uniform and walks out the door, there is no guarantee they will come home.
And there are spouses who have to smile, say โI love you,โ and watch their hero pull out of the driveway and go back on patrolโeven while carrying the fear that comes after a tragedy like the loss of an officer.
Those feelings are real, and they don't simply disappear when the funeral is over or the headlines move on.
At The Haven, we want law enforcement spouses and children to know that we are here for you too.
Behind every badge is a family, and our mission has always included supporting that family. Whether you need a quiet place to get away, somewhere to spend time together as a family, someone to talk to, or simply to be around people who understand this life, our door is open.
We also work to connect the children and families of fallen officers with resources and continued support because grief doesn't end when the funeral is over. In many ways, that's when continuing to check on the spouse, the children, and the officers who remain becomes even more important.
There is absolutely no cost for anything we provide.
And our R U OK? message isn't just for the officer wearing the badge.
It's for the spouse who watches them leave.
It's for the family carrying the weight of this profession alongside them.
Consider getting an R U OK? window cling for your personal vehicle. Put one on the windshield where you'll see it when you get behind the wheel, or place one on a mirror in your home.
Maybe on a difficult day, those three simple words will be the reminder you need:
R U OK?
You are not alone. The Haven is here. No officer, spouse, or child should have to walk through the difficult parts of this profession alone.
If you're a law enforcement spouse and you need someone to talk to, a place to get away, or simply someone who understands, please reach out to us.
