December 7, 1941, will be forever known as ‘The Date That Will Live in Infamy’ in the United States. President Franklin Roosevelt uttered those words in response to the heinous and deliberate attack by the Empire of Japan on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The surprise attack on an early Sunday morning killed 2,403 U.S. service personnel, including 50 servicemen from Illinois. The attack also injured 1,178 people, and included with the deceased were 68 civilians.

Today RTKY5 was asked to take part in the burial ceremony for U.S. AIR FORCE veteran, Shirley Hampton.
As the wintery day unfolded it became our honor to provide her es**rt, serve as her pall bearers and most importantly, become her family.

This veteran was abandoned by her family who made it clear they had no desire to be a part of her ceremony or show a single portion of care.
She was forsaken.
Alone.
Discarded like so much refuse.
Left to be placed in a "Potter's Field" for the unloved and forgotten.

Thanks to the efforts of representatives at Scobee Funeral Home in Wi******er this unimaginable fate was not accepted and Shirley was buried today with the full military honors she deserved in the hallowed ground of Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

These ceremonies are always sad and easily bring one to tears, but this one hit even harder. The sadness of today was intensified by the iciness of the elements and the brutal reality of a veteran, a family member, a human unwanted.
The cemetery was draped in a frozen blanket of snow. The piercing air wrapped around you with a bitterness that took your breath and was matched only by the icy-cold, solemn loneliness of a veteran abandoned.

The heart and compassion of this chapter was on full display today as we provided Shirley her dignified es**rt, humbly served as her pall bearers and with unwavering humanity became her family. In the end we ensured she was not alone, not forgotten and not unloved.

Today we remember another of the 14 MIAs from Ky during the Vietnam War…Capt John C Stringer of Richmond Ky. Today is the 55 anniversary of him being listed Missing In Action.

On 30 November 1970, then 1st Lt. John C. Stringer II was the platoon leader for Company B, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, on a combat mission in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.

1st Lt. Stringer's company was preparing to cross a river at Mai Loc, which flowed through dense jungle, about 15 miles east northeast of Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. A rope had been secured on both sides of the river with the help of a helicopter and John Stringer was the first one to attempt crossing it. As he reached mid-stream, he apparently lost his grip on the rope and was swept downstream in the swift current.

At one point, he was seen near the northern bank holding onto an overhanging branch. As rescuers approached him, the branch broke and 1st Lt. Stringer was seen being pulled under the water some distance downstream. Searches on both banks of the stream were made by elements of the John Stringer's company, but they found no trace of him. Both aerial and ground searches were initiated the next morning and continued through 10 December. Again, there was no sign of the missing platoon leader. John C. Stringer III was listed Missing in Action.

The river Company D attempted to cross was quite muddy with jungle growth flourishing along both banks. Tree limbs and vines overhung the winding river's edge and the current flowed swiftly. No remains were found.

Today, we remember another of the 14 MIAs still missing from the Vietnam War, Col. Joseph C Morrison, US Air Force, of Lexington, KY.

On November 25, 1968, an F-4D Phantom II with two crew members took off with a reconnaissance aircraft on a mission over North Vietnam. While over the target area, the F-4D radioed that it had been hit and crashed soon after. The reconnaissance aircraft aborted the mission immediately but did not see the Phantom crash; however, the reconnaissance aircraft did detect a steady rescue beeper and directed search and rescue aircraft to the area. Search teams located the crash site and made voice contact with the crew but were driven off by small arms fire. Bad weather complicated search efforts in the following days, and by the time searchers arrived on the ground, neither of the Phantom's crew members could be located.

Major Joseph Castleman Morrison entered the U.S. Air Force from Kentucky and served in the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. He was the aircraft commander aboard the Phantom when it was shot down, and is still unaccounted for. Following the incident, the Air Force promoted Maj Morrison to the rank of Colonel (Col).
