An early June Field Day with Mac Stone on Elmwood Stock Farm's certified organic pastures was rich with knowledge-sharing of time-tested methods for the integrated grazing of hair sheep, chickens and turkeys in a regenerative system using portable electric fencing, farm-built structures, farmer innovation and regular observation.

The farm's rotational grazing is the backbone of the farm's management, as raising livestock on pasture requires healthy soils and healthy plants for forage. By continually moving from pasture to pasture, Elmwood's animals naturally fertilize and condition the soil life, preparing fields for future residents - either pasture for the next round of livestock or vegetables for grateful customers.

Dive into some of Mac's tried and true methods in the resources from this Field Day, available at oak-ky.org/field-days.

Pollinator and flower lovers, this Field Day is for you! Join OAK the morning of July 7 at the KSU Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm (Frankfort) for a Farmer Field Day on pollinator habitat, beekeeping and cut flower production.

Field Day hosts Oluwaseun (Seun) Mofikoya and Linelle Rivera Rodriguez, Research and Extension Associates in Organic Agriculture, will lead the event, alongside apiculture and forestry research and extension associates visiting three Farm highlights: the organic herb and cut flower field, large working apiary and native pollinator research plots. Field day participants will explore on-farm considerations such as w**d management methods for cut flower production, how farmers can manage honeybee hives organically, and which methods for establishing pollinator habitats work best at different scales.

OAK is thrilled to partner with KSU for this Field Day in support of farmers and agriculture professionals across Kentucky. Register today at oak-ky.org/field-days.

Mac Stone has been advocating for organic agriculture and growing Kentucky's organic community for decades, starting during his tenure at KSU's Harold R. Benson Research Farm, where he was instrumental in implementing organic practices. He later spearheaded the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Organic Program, served on the USDA's National Organic Standards Board and was an OAK Board Member and Chair for many years. At this year's OAK conference, Mac, his wife Ann and his brother-in-law John Bell received OAK's inaugural Organic Farmer Award for their collective efforts via Elmwood Stock Farm.

Education and community outreach have been central to Mac's work in organic agriculture, and he often hosts tours at Elmwood Stock Farm, where he raises organic pastured poultry and sheep.

OAK is thrilled to partner with Mac to host a Farmer Field Day on interspecies grazing at Elmwood Stock Farm, June 1 from 9am-12pm. Register at oak-ky.org/field-days.
