A 600-tree project that took place last month in southern Rockbridge isn’t yet listed on our carbon offset marketplace, but it had all the hallmarks of a COREworks-worthy endeavor. Notably, the reforestation project wasn’t just about sequestering carbon, but connecting and inspiring people too. This project brought together two organizations – Boxerwood and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation – plus the landowners and team of forestry students from Rockbridge County High School. Planting trees together not only restored the land but helped these vocationally-focused teens forge new knowledge, skills, and career connections. In the COREworks world, caring for the Earth and one another go hand in hand.

🌎 Earth Month Highlight 🌍

Shout out to the Washington and Lee Student Environmental Action League for planting trees! Earlier this month, these earth stewards planted 15 flowering native trees at Jordan’s Point Park with some help from Boxerwood. These trees will be part of a future COREworks emission-reducing project. Thank you ! 🌳

Happy Birthday COREworks! 🎂 Tomorrow marks four years since the debut of COREworks. It started as a group of W&L students coming to Boxerwood looking for a way to offset the environmental impact of Mock Con 2020, and it has blossomed and branched into a full fledged local carbon offset marketplace. After two years of research and planning, Boxerwood launched COREworks into the world in February 2022 with the mission to support the local economy and ecology right here in Rockbridge by providing a way for people and organizations to offset their own environmental impact.

Since its inception, COREWorks has verified and helped fund local projects that:

🌳 Enabled hundreds of community volunteers including children to plant 3,000+ native trees across Rockbridge, increasing habitat for local wildlife and decreasing pollution for local waterways.

🍎 Involved than 900 students involved in daily school composting efforts

🪱 Enabled the diversion of 25,500+ lbs of food waste diverted from the Rockbridge County Landfill via composting instead.

☀️Resulted in the generation of 342 high-quality carbon offsets from our solar, tree planting, and compost pathways

Racing with COREworks

We are inspired by the sustainability vision of Friends of the Chessie Trail, who recently secured two COREworks offsets to balance out the ecological impact of their race day on November 6th, 2026. The race website also enables registrants across the nation to make their own COREworks donation to offset their travel to Lexington. More than 800 runners from 30 states registered for this event last year. Highlighting COREworks on the Chessie race website ensures many visitors will learn about an opportunity to make a difference right here in Rockbridge. Thank you, Friends!

Tree-planting, composting, solar – take your pick! Procure a verified offset from an existing project and 100% of the proceeds help underwrite the next. Plus, we’ll send you or your loved one a handsome certificate for that stocking.

Full circle moment! Rockbridge County High School Agriculture teacher Gwen Gosney just welcomed 200 gallons of homegrown compost for her program’s new raised beds. The compost came from Fairfield Elementary, whose students last year diverted 2,659 lbs. of food waste to their school-based composters. The story doesn’t end there, though. The Fairfield composting is part of Boxerwood’s Waste Buster program, a methane-prevention enterprise that also happens to generate quantified and verified carbon offsets for the COREworks marketplace. Bottom line: when you secure a carbon offset from COREworks, 100% of your quick transaction helps fund the next carbon-reducing project, in a homegrown, wild and wonderful, perpetual cycle of good!

Boxerwood’s homegrown carbon offset marketplace, COREworks, helps travelers go carbon neutral while also benefitting Rockbridge, and that’s exactly what the W&L Earth and Environmental Geosciences Department did earlier this year. Leading a student expedition to New Zealand in May, Professor Margaret Anne Hinkle turned to COREworks to offset emissions from their long flight to the land of the Kiwis. The result: W&L’s first carbon-neutral study abroad course. As part of their learning, students also researched carbon offsets and the COREworks model, ultimately securing offsets from all 3 types of COREworks projects: solar, composting, and tree planting. Ready to offset your own adventure? We’re here!
