Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and summer events can bring renewed waves of grief for children and teens. Preparing ahead of time by talking openly about feelings and making a simple plan for the day can help reduce anxiety. Sometimes children may want to honor their loved one, while other times they may want distraction and normalcy. Both responses are okay.

Grief doesn’t always look like sadness in children. Sometimes it shows up as irritability, clinginess, silence, trouble focusing, or bursts of energy. Try giving children creative ways to express emotions through drawing, music, movement, or storytelling. When children feel safe expressing feelings without judgment, healing conversations can begin.

Behind every support group at KCGCF are compassionate volunteers helping children and families feel seen, heard, and supported. We are especially looking for caring adults to work with our youngest children ages 3-6.

Whether you volunteer in groups, donate snacks for Thursday evenings, or help spread awareness in the community, your support matters deeply. Join us in creating safe spaces for grieving families by emailing [email protected] if interested in volunteering!

Instead of: “Everything happens for a reason.”
Try: “I’m so sorry this happened. I’m here with you.”

Children and teens don’t need explanations for grief. They need presence, honesty, and support. Sitting beside someone in their pain is often more healing than trying to make sense of it.

Summer can bring unexpected reminders of loss, especially when routines change. Create a “Memory Jar” with your child by writing favorite memories, funny moments, or comforting thoughts about their loved one on slips of paper. On difficult days, they can pull one out and revisit a meaningful connection. Small rituals like this can help children feel supported while keeping memories close.

The Kentucky Center for Grieving Children & Families is honored to partner with Josephine Sculpture Park on the installation of a Wind Phone in Frankfort — a meaningful space for remembrance, reflection, and healing. 💜

A Wind Phone is a disconnected phone that allows people to “call” loved ones they’ve lost, helping maintain connection, express thoughts left unsaid, or find comfort through grief.

We’re also grateful to see this project and the importance of grief-centered spaces highlighted in this recent article about UK architecture students creating spaces for grief and healing:

For Central Kentucky children ages 10–14 who have experienced grief or trauma, Camp Skybound offers a safe and encouraging place to connect, heal, and have fun. 💙

This fully scholarship-funded camp at Bluegrass Christian Camp runs August 3–5 and includes one-on-one mentorship, team-building activities, swimming, kayaking, ziplining, and more!

Families and community partners are encouraged to learn more and share this opportunity with children who may benefit from a supportive summer experience.

Instead of: “They wouldn’t want you to be sad.”

Try: “It’s okay to feel sad; it shows how much you love them.”

Grief is a reflection of love. Reassuring children that their sadness is a natural tribute, rather than something their loved one would disapprove of, helps them process their loss without guilt.

Sharing stories is a beautiful way to keep a loved one’s spirit alive. Ask your child, “What is a funny story you remember?” or “What was their favorite thing to wear?” Talking about these small, specific memories can help children feel connected to their loved one and keep their memory close in everyday moments.
