Local train history shared by Historic Lexington Foundation board member, Byron Faidley: "In 1954, with the improvement of public roads and increases in private automobile ownership, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway decided to discontinue regular passenger service between Lexington from Buena Vista. The final day came on June 30, 1954. This ticket from the last day of service was a gift from Seth Goodhart to Byron Faidley. The photographs were taken in the old Lexington Passenger Station, next to the ticket window, and now the offices of ODK and HLF."

Thank you to Rockbridge Vignettes for sharing photos and information on the Hamilton School!

Before 1870, Virginia had no state-supervised school system; families that could afford it sent their sons (and later daughters) to private academies. Local schools were formed voluntarily by parents or local governments, usually for poor children . That’s how Hamilton’s School House on South Buffalo Creek got its start in 1823 — built on an acre of land donated on Feb. 3, 1823, by Robert Hamilton and his family, and meant as a church as well as school. William H. Letcher, brother of Hamilton’s wife and father of future Virginia governor John Letcher, is said to have built the one-room school in a matter of months.

Many attended this morning’s Memorial Day program at the Veterans Memorial Garden on Main Street even with a misty rain falling. It was a wonderful tribute in memory and honor of those who lost their lives preserving our freedom.
