Some people don’t just build a career — they build connections that move an entire industry forward.

This week, we honor 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢, whose passion for people, innovation, and the horse helped expand access to advanced veterinary care across the country.

A graduate of Manhattan University and Iona College, Brunelli combined his love for animals with a talent for business to lead Universal Imaging Inc. for more than 40 years — growing it into the largest privately owned veterinary ultrasound distributor in the United States. Through his work, he helped bring critical diagnostic tools into the hands of veterinarians, advancing care for countless horses.

Known for his energy, warmth, and ability to connect with others, Brunelli built lasting relationships throughout the industry — always ready with a smile, a story, and a genuine interest in the people around him.

Brunelli passed away in 2020, but his legacy lives on in the connections he fostered and the impact of his work. In recognition of his impact and influence, he was inducted into The Foundation for the Horse's My Mentor Honor Wall the same year.

The Foundation for the Horse reviews 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 applications on a rolling basis, which means grants may be awarded before the application period closes.

Join us in celebrating Megan McCarthy, the 2026 winner of the Dr. William H. Sweeney Memorial Scholarship, administered by The Foundation for the Horse!

Megan, an equine veterinary student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, is one of the outstanding scholarship recipients we’ll introduce over the next couple of months, leading up to the official scholarship presentation at the AAEP Annual Convention, beginning December 7 in Las Vegas. This year, The Foundation for the Horse is awarding 30 scholarships totaling $625,000 to support the next generation of equine veterinarians.

Some mentors show you how to do it all with purpose, passion, and consistency.

This week, we honor 𝐃𝐫. 𝐓𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐤𝐞𝐧, whose career reflects a deep commitment to the horse, the profession, and the people within it.

A graduate of University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Brokken completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at the University of Saskatchewan College of Veterinary Medicine before joining the practice of Dr. M.B. Teigland in Miami. He became a partner in 1974 and later served as president of Teigland, Franklin and Brokken from 1990 to 2004, helping guide one of the most respected equine practices in the country.

His leadership extended nationally through the American Association of Equine Practitioners, where he served as president in 2005 after years of committee and board service, contributing to the advancement of equine veterinary medicine through both leadership and education. In recognition for his impact, he was inducted into The Foundation for the Horse's My Mentor Honor Wall program in 2022.

With a special focus on the diagnosis and treatment of lameness in Thoroughbred racehorses, Dr. Brokken built a reputation for clinical excellence — matched by his ability to connect with clients, colleagues, and teams at every level.

For those who worked alongside him, the lessons went far beyond medicine.

Just one week remains to submit abstracts for the 𝟏𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦, bringing scientists and clinicians together March 9-11, 2027, in Ocala, Florida.

Recent work across all aspects of equine gastroenterology is welcome, including basic science research, clinical cases, and novel approaches to treatment.

Authors may submit their work for consideration as an oral presentation, poster presentation, or either format.

This week, we honor 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐧 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭, whose lifelong dedication to the horse shaped not only an iconic program, but an entire industry.

From humble beginnings in Spearman, Texas, to his role as resident veterinarian and horse division manager at the legendary 6666 Ranch, Dr. Blodgett built more than a world-class breeding operation — he built a legacy of excellence, integrity, and deep respect for the horse.

But those who knew him best will tell you that his greatest impact wasn’t just in the horses, it was in the people.

Through mentorship, example, and an unwavering work ethic, Dr. Blodgett influenced generations of veterinarians and equestrians — guiding careers, shaping values, and elevating the standard of care across the industry. This and more earned him his spot in The Foundation for the Horse's My Mentor Honor Wall program in 2025.

Although he passed away in November 2022, his legacy endures — in the countless lives he touched, the veterinarians he mentored, and the elevated standard he set for the care, breeding, and respect of the horse.
