Blake and Lindsay followed Justice out onto the course to run his short green leg and her yellow leg while others were tucked snugly into their sleeping bags, mostly into their cars to escape the rain! Blake and Lindsay are long-time supporters of and runners for Team Mercy, and they get the long-distance award—not for running, but for traveling the farthest to join the team for this run! How far would you travel to do hard work in order to support something that you care about? Blake ran his leg in memory and in honor of Gabriel, Noah, Jacob, Madilyn, and Myles. Lindsay ran her leg in memory and in honor of Skyler and Sawyer.

Jacob is a serious runner, and when I say that, I mean multiple multiple marathons—even all over the world! But one of the big differences is: most of those marathons take place in the daylight! On went the headlamp once he had waited out the pause after Khoji’s loop, and that technical green was added to his accomplishments! How do you handle doing something that you’re really good—even an expert at, except you’re asked to do it in a new way or with a different wrinkle? Jacob ran this loop in memory and in honor of Ariel, Melanie, Johnathan, Amberly and Toby.

What followed the heaviest part of the storm was rain, rain and more rain with a significant temperature drop from just a few hours previous. Once the weather stop expired for the team, Justice was out on his red loop. You could say he had a Stop, the temperature Dropped, so he had to just Roll with it. And roll with it he did, making relatively quick work of the red loop! How do you start again after you’ve hit “pause”? (For example, it took me more than 24 hours to finally get these posts started again!) Justice ran this loop in memory and in honor of Emily, Kaden, and Colin and in memory and in honor of Keagan, Harper and Carter.

After that night of flooded tents, missing canopies, 50mph gusts of wind and sleeping in cars, I am going to wait until I can get to the hotel for a shower, a nap and HEAT to post the rest of our team’s honor legs. For those who have been following us, we were offered the opportunity to “double up” in order to get through quicker. We had several folks take advantage of that, so we have only a few legs left outstanding on both teams. We are all okay, but ready to be done! Of course, when we get to this part of a relay, I always reflect on those who don’t get to be “done” with what they’re going through. Those who don’t get a medal or a swag bag or the satisfaction of hearing the cheers when they have a breakthrough. So while you’re waiting for the last of our posts, maybe pray for those who are in the middle of the never-ending and the unimaginable.

Allison finished her yellow loop (despite the lack of drinking water on the trail…though that was about to be a non-issue!). Khoji left on his red loop just minutes before they called for the minimum 2-hour weather stop. We would ask that you join us in praying for his safety, as it’s difficult to get in touch with folks out on the trail to let him know that he has the option to either finish or be brought in by the Ragnar folks. The radar has more red and yellow than green, and the winds are gusting. He is running his loop in mem”ory and in honor of Harper, Seth and Lily and in memory and in honor of Freya and Lilly.

While I did a brief stint at the Ragnar headquarters, Jermey went out on his green loop and finished it. Knowing that there was a band of storms looming on the horizon, he left Andrea enough time to get through her yellow loop before they started rolling in in earnest. Andrea came in just after they issued a minimum 2-hour weather stop. Sometimes you just have to stop—to look around and take account of whether the situation is safe for you and for others. How do you handle the disappointment, relief, or other emotions that come with realizing you need to stop for yourself or for someone else? Jermey ran his loop in memory and in honor of Malani, Miranda, and Emeterio. Andrea ran her loop in memory and in honor of Trenton and Nevaeh.

Allison is now out on the course, doing her yellow loop. She took several minutes to decide what she would wear out onto the trail, trying to balance warmth and clothing weight and feel and coolness when she began to get warmed up. Intentionally, she put back some of the items, deciding what would be most comfortable and functional. I am reflecting on the relationship between mothers and daughters and arguments over what to wear, especially as young people get older and have different ideas about how to express themselves through clothes. How did you get along with a parent in negotiating those growing moments? I am especially thinking about this because Allison is running this loop for one of our sibling groups: Kohen and Kollins AND for the sibling group that includes her own mother: Carolyn, Ray, Paul, Sandy, Joe and Rosey. Would love for you to pray her on in.

Just a scant 20 minutes after Lillie got back and Clint went out, Barrett came into the tent to hand off to Jennings, who is running her green loop. Jennings has been a constant in the world of . She has been with us for every road and trail relay except for the first one, and it’s really awesome to have all of those memories represented by someone who shows up—not just for all of us, but for those we run for. Who are the constants in your life, those who have been with you for many years and who show up for you? Who do you show up for? Jennings is running this loop in memory and in honor of Hailey, Shai, Dakota, Noah, and Kenyon.

Lillie successfully finished her yellow loop and then went to find some deserved rest, so we are looping back around to Clint, who is currently out on the course running the red loop. Except for the occasional burst of wind, it is calm in the tent city, people trying to use a few moments to catch at least a catnap. The fire for s’mores still burns in the village, though with the wind, it’s either be directly in the path of the smoke or feel none of the warmth. S’mores over a camp stove anyone? Truthfully, we’re all tired and a little on edge. Sleep seems like the best prescription (except for those out running!). How do you get rest when you need to be in a state of readiness? Clint is running this loop in memory and in honor of Zeke and Zoey and in memory and in honor of Max, Mazie and Maura.
