We are heartbroken. James will be missed.

The City of Lewisville is saddened to announce the passing of James Kunke, the Director of Community Engagement, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

James dedicated 23 years of service to the Lewisville community after working for the City of Southlake, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was passionate about inclusivity and ensuring every voice was heard. He believed deeply in meeting people where they were and creating space for connection and belonging.

James was truly a people-centered leader. His team would do anything for him because they knew he would do the same for them. He encouraged everyone to be bold, take chances, and follow their passion. James was a man of many ideas and had a very large personality and a great sense of humor.

His passion outside of work was his wife, Laurie, and their daughter, Macy. He spoke of them often and proudly, and that love shaped the way he cared for others each day. He also had a passion for the Fighting Farmers, the UT Longhorns, and the theater arts, and he never missed an opportunity to celebrate all of them.

James’ family has not announced funeral plans at this time. Lewisville Mayor TJ Gilmore has ordered the Lewisville flag to be lowered to half-staff at all City facilities in James’ honor, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 24, for a period of five days or until burial, whichever is earlier.

Today on GivingTuesday, we’re reminded of the power of community generosity. Recently, a local mom shared how a youth sponsorship made it possible for her son to join a park-affiliated program—giving him confidence, new friends, and a place to belong.

That’s the heart of what Lewisville Park Alliance does.
Your GivingTuesday contributions help fund:
✔️ Key park projects that support the Parks & Recreation Department’s long-term vision
✔️ Youth sponsorships for programs and memberships
✔️ Future spaces where families can learn, play, and grow together

When you give, you make moments like these possible for families across Lewisville. 💚
