What if we treated public art like medicine?

That’s the idea Maine Arts Commission Executive Director Amy Hausmann explores in her essay, Art Is Medicine: The Case for Public Art as Our Most Essential Prescription, featured in TEMPOart Portland 's newest publication, The Shared Space.

We look at the ways art in our shared spaces can do more than make a place beautiful. It can help us feel connected, create a sense of belonging, strengthen our relationship to place, and remind us that public space really does belong to all of us.

The Shared Space is a love letter to public art, packed with stories about artists and projects in Portland and across Maine, plus a statewide guide to public art worth getting out and seeing for yourself.

🎤Join us at LA Arts on October 8, 2026, 7-9pm!

Theme: "Visions of Light"

We're kicking off the new season of The Corner with an exploration of light (and by contrast, dark). Think about stories where light or dark plays a critical role in how the story unfolds, perhaps itself almost a character in the story. Maybe your story is about an idea that you had that went off like a lightbulb above your head, or a time when dark clouds, figurative or literal, blocked out the light and made it hard to see what came next. "Visions of Light" is the name of the current exhibition of photographs on display at LA Arts by photographer and artist Harold Strout. Harold Strout Consider Harold's words from the exhibition text about light and "how it reveals mood, memory and tone regardless of genre and subject. I invite you to consider the gift of light and how these images may contribute to your own visions."

As always, the themes at The Corner are just a starting point, an opportunity to take a story idea in any direction.

Award-winning poet and filmmaker, Ladan Osman, author of Exiles of Eden, will read from her work alongside Guest Maine Poets. A community dinner will kick-off the night.

Ladan Osman is the author of Exiles of Eden, winner of the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and a Whiting Award, and The Kitchen-Dweller’s Testimony, winner of the Sillerman Prize. Osman’s poetry has been translated into over 10 languages. Her images were exhibited by Jenkins Johnson Gallery, Arts Incubator, Furious Flower, and the New York African Film Festival. Her work as a director includes: The Ascendants, Just Sam, and Sun of the Soil. She lives in New York.

Liam Grant (Boston, MA):

Liam Grant is a New England guitarist and improviser cut from the American Primitive cloth. The restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving uptempo rags recall the likes of Grant’s pedagogue, Takoma Records, and the path that was paved by his forebears John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Max Ochs and later Glenn Jones, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and others.

Bridging that past Grant evokes the pith of the landscape where he was raised. Instrumental memoirs and ruminations on the banks of the Merrimack River. Amoskeag. And the place where the waters flow around it. Salmon tails up the river, the exodus to Stratton-Eustis and the last night on Dead River before the great flood.

Lisa / Liza (Starks, ME):

Maine based songwriter Liza Victoria is one of the last remaining tenants of the freak folk scene that so purposefully defined the north-east throughout the aughts.
She continues to carry it forward while bringing to mind all that was so damn good about the revolving door of strange outfitters like Big Blood, Cerberus Shoals, Fire on Fire, Arborea, Micah Blue Smaldone and others.

Will DeLee:

Will DeLee is from all sides an inventive self-taught guitarist and Charango player from the Pacific Northwest. He works the strings with nail and callus in a highly articulated, improvised and rhapsodic style.

Sketches in flamenco azure and soaring north american ragas in elegance and spirit. His approach is with classical suave and avant resolve.
